Today we kick off the  September Linky Party for the 2015 Free-Motion Quilting Challenge, which will be open for this month only.  To clarify, this summer, our monthly challenges were opened thru September 15th and there is still time to enter the following challenges:

May Challenge with Cindy Needham
June Challenge with Diane Gaudynski
July Challenge with Paula Reid
August Challenge with Angela Waters

This month we showcase Kaleidoscope Kreator 3 (aka KK3) software, from Kaleidoscope Collections, and Teri Lucas, who is a Master Free-Motion Quilter and teacher.  We hope to inspire you to play and create with KK software and free-motion quilting.  Possibilities are endless.  There is also an machine embroidery (ME) option for those that enjoy ME, which will also incorporate free-motion quilting.

Jeanie Sumrall-Ajero is also the creator of the Kaleidoscope Collections software and machine embroidery designs.  She has created many award winning quilts, teaches wonderful classes, which I highly recommend, for using the Kaleidoscope Collections software as well as machine embroidery designs.  And, she is a new designer for Hoffman California Fabrics.

To clarify, there is also an option to participate in this challenge without purchasing the KK software.  But personally, I honestly think this challenge will be more fun for those that use the KK software.

For those not familiar with Kaleidoscope Collections, software and machine embroidery designs created by Jeanie Sumrall-Ajero.  I have used this versatile software for years, which I find to be  super fun and easy to use, while allowing you to convert images into a Kaleidoscope, where the creative possibilities are endless.

I quickly and easily created a variety of Kaleidoscope designs for which I can easily size and print on fabric, using my home printer, or save to a file to use to make greeting cards, jewelry, etc..  Here is a gallery of a few of my designs from one photo, but I could have created many more unique kaleidoscope designs using KK3 software:

Can you visualize how these designs would look in a free-motion quilted project and how much fun you could have creating your own fabric designs with KK3 software?  I’m here to help, if you need help pursuing this challenge.  Just leave a comment on this post, or email me.

And here is a video where Jeanie Sumrall-Ajero that provides a good overview of how the KK3 software works for quilters:

MONTHLY FMQ EXPERT FOR SEPTEMBER:

As mentioned, our expert this month is Teri Lucas and she is an award winning quilter and teacher.   You may be familiar with Teri from our 2012 FMQ Challenge, Facebook, her blog (Teri Lucas Quilts), having taken a class or workshop with her,  articles published in various magazines such as Quilting Arts, or her articles as the Associate Editor of Generation Q Magazine.

Here are a few of examples of Teri’s beautiful free-motion quilting:

I hope you can see why I’m delighted to showcase Kaleidoscope Collections and Teri Lucas in our 2015 FMQ Challenge this month.

SEPTEMBER CHALLENGE – OPTIONS:

OPTION #1

Create a pillow using the free-motion quilting tutorial by Teri Lucas, that was shared in the 2012 FMQ Challenge.  For those that do not want to purchase the Kaleidoscope Kreator (aka KK) software, this tutorial also provides a free downloadable template that you can use to mark on your fabric, but using the KK software will certainly be more fun!

Here is a pillow created using KK3 and the Filigree Template Pack, made by Jeanie.  I’m sharing this for inspiration.  If you need a tutorial to make this specific pillow, let me know.  But do remember, you can use KK3 softare, any template, or use the free PDF provided by Teri Lucas in this challenge to create a pillow of any size and design that you wish.  This is a versatile challenge!

For those that will use the KK software, you can also use any Template Pack (e.g. Feathers, Filigree, Snowflakes, Tiles, Blossoms, Frame Frenzy, or Quilters’ Polygon) that you wish.

OPTION #2

For those that enjoy machine embroidery, create a pillow where your design uses the KK software and any of the complimentary machine embroidery design collections (e.g. Feathers, Filigrees, Snowflakes) AND inco

Here is a video tutorial by Jeanie that shows machine embroidery enthusiasts how to use KK3 software to print on fabric and stitch out these embroidery designs.

OPTION #3

For those that may have an electronic cutter (e.g. Silhouette, Brother Scan-N-Cut, Sizzix Eclipse, etc), consider using Kaleidoscope Kreator 3 software and your electronic cutter, to create your own unique applique Kaleidoscope design that you can applique, add free-motion quilting and create a stunning pillow. Or create a stencil and paint your KK3 created motif on your fabric, followed by adding free-motion quilting designs of your choice.

KK software uses your domestic printer to print on fabric, which typically maxes out at 8.5″ wide.  For those that use Electric Quilt Software you can play with your design to determine the size of your blocks and overall layout.  For those that do not use EQ Software of course you can sketch it out on paper.  But, here are a few ideas I came up with and wanted to share:

For 20″ pillows I played with a couple of versions, but don’t forget possibilities are endless….

8″ blocks with sashing and borders

pillow 20 inch 2

6″ blocks on point

pillow 20 inch 3

ENTER THIS CHALLENGE – JOIN THIS LINKY PARTY

Don’t overlook that you can create more than one pillow, to claim more than one entry to any of the monthly challenges.  You want to do more than one of the options, or all.  Each option you complete counts as an entry.    And the more you create, the  more opportunities you have to learn and improve your FMQ skills, as well as win more prizes!

RULES TO ENTER THIS CHALLENGE:

1) Entries need to be completed pillows that show free-motion quilting that aligns with the options defined in this monthly challenge. Note:  Other projects that you wish to share can be added to the Flickr group, but do not share them via the link tool.

2) You can enter one completed pillow for any, or all of the options.  Bloggers can do so in one blog post, but to help with the entries, their post needs to show photos and clarify which options they are entering for this monthly challenge.  Non-bloggers need to reflect the same as bloggers, in the comments for the photo they upload to the flickr group for this challenge. Both bloggers and non-bloggers can add one link to the linky tool, for each of the options they wish to enter.  Note, to help with administration, please be sure the photo in the linky tool reflects which of the challenge options you are claiming when you enter/add the link.

Those that want to apply the challenge to projects other than pillows, or those that complete the challenge after the given month, as well as those that may wish to share other FMQ projects are encouraged to share in a Flirk group that has been created specifically for group sharing and inspiration:     https://www.flickr.com/groups/2815271@N22/   To clarify, this group is open to anyone that wishes to share any FMQ project that they created.

While most of these linky parties are open for one month, this Linky party and other challenges released during the summer will be open thru mid-September, but I encourage you to not wait till the last minute to enter.  You need to have your project completed and linked to enter to win prizes.  Those that may complete this challenge at a different time, as well as those that want to share any FMQ related project, are encouraged to share photos in the Flickr group created for this challenge: https://www.flickr.com/groups/2815271@N22/

If you are not familiar with how to use a linky click here for a tutorial.

For blogger participants that are interested in posting a badge, the badge code is now on the right hand column of this blog.  Thank you for posting the badge.  The more quilters we have participating, the more fun and inspiration we will all have.  But I need your help to spread the word and encourage others to join, or at least come look and visit all the blogs (and non-bloggers) that share their FMQ projects with us via the Monthly linky parties and the Flicker Group sharing.
