Sewing Teddy Bears – Sewing Hope

Many of us know that a quilt can provide great comfort to those dealing with various life challenges, just as sewn animals.  But I find it amazing and heartwarming when I hear about young people who go above and beyond to make things to provide such comfort to strangers.  Sewing Hope, is one story that should not be overlooked and I want to share it with you today:

Campbell, a 12 year old boy, looks at sadness and tries to turn it upside down, making hundreds of teddy bears for sick children.

While I tried to make contact with young Campbell, to find out if there is a way those interested could donate supplies and/or money, I was not able to do so.  Still, I wanted to share this heartwarming story.

9 Months to Crochet

I’m excited to be able to share insights with you today about a new books with #CreativeGoodness from Martingale.

The New Year is always fun, but even more exciting when you are looking forward to the arrival of a new baby.  On the other hand, it is even fun when one has already arrived.  Babies just make life so much fun.  Of course, it is also fun to make things for babies too!

I’m excited to be able to share insights with you today about a fun new book from Martingale, which has some wonderful projects you can make for babies.

“9 Months to Crochet – Count Down to the Big Day with Crochet! – 25 Projects to Make While You Wait”, by Maaike Van Koert,  is definitely a book filled with #CreativeGoodness and fun projects for babies, as well as the excitement about the arrival of a new baby.

PUBLISHER’S INSIGHTS:

Is there a baby on the way? Spend nine months crocheting a darling collection of infant outfits and nursery gear for boys or girls, including toys, blankets, and pillows–plus stylish accessories and clever organizing options for the new mom. Cute and classic with a modern twist, these eye-catching designs are perfect for welcoming a little one!

Available to customers in the U.S. and Canada only.

About the Author:

Maaike von Koert is a talented crochet designer and author who runs creJJtion.com, a popular website for crochet enthusiasts. Maaike grew up in the Netherlands, lived for a while in Canada, and then returned to the Netherlands where she lives with her husband, daughter, and Floyd the chocolate Labrador.

MY PERSPECTIVE:

This book is packed with absolutely adorable items to crochet for a new baby to wear, cuddle with, as well as to decorate their room.  All of the patterns come with easy to follow instructions and great visuals, making this book perfect for a beginner, as well as those with expertise with crochet work.  I hope you can see with I feel this book is such an exceptional value with 25 wonderful projects.  I do hope you get a chance to check it out at your local quilt or sewing center, but don’t forget if you don’t see it, to let them know you’d like them to carry it.  It is such a new book they might not be aware of it.  Of course you can also check it out online at Martingale, as well as Amazon.

For those that may not have a baby on the way, or a recent arrival, don’t overlook the fun you can have with this book to make handmade gifts for some future baby.  There are so many babies born every year, whose families would love such a handmade gift.  They also make great items to go into baby themed gift baskets for silent auction fundraisers.  But one of my most favorite and common reasons to make baby gifts is for Operation Homefront.

Operation Homefront is a non-profit program that focuses on helping Military families and Wounded Warriors with financial assistance, food assistance, repairs and so much more.  And, they also host several group baby showers for soon to be mothers, often living away from family and friends, while their husband is deployed and they are having a baby.  If you are not familiar with this program, click thru to find out more info.  I also hope you’ll contact your nearest office and let them know you are interested in making handmade baby items for them to give to these soon to be mothers, or find out other ways you can help these families.

As there are also many ways to help others, I’m also hoping that if you have a favorite way where someone can make a cute baby item and donate to a good cause, that you’ll share by way of leaving a comment below.  Of course, if you have a baby on the way, or a recent arrival, I’d love to hear about that too!

RARE Science:The RARE Bear Project and a Charity Fundraiser

RARE Science is a non-profit research organization, that through a unique collaborative approach, works directly with patient families and foundations to find more immediate therapeutic solutions for children with rare disease.  Christina Waters is a medical geneticist who started this program which also provides handmade “RARE Bears” to children, around the world, with rare diseases.  There are approximately 200 million kids worldwide that have rare diseases – 35% of these kids do not live to see their 5th birthday. RARE Science is working to improve those statistics and change the lives of children with rare diseases.

Volunteers are needed to join the RARE Bear Army and there are a variety of ways you can help.

RARE Science is teaming up with The QuiltShow.comSpoonflower, Simplicity Patterns, Fairfield World and an army of volunteers to bring to life these wonderful companions for kids with rare diseases.  Volunteers of all skill sets to enlist in the #RAREBearArmy. For more information on how to get involved or if you would like to donate a bear to a child in need – please visit us at our website: http://www.rarescience.org/rare-bear-program/

For those attending Quilt Festival/Houston there are a couple of opportunities where you can also help:

On Friday, November 4th from 6 to 8pm, 200 participants will stuff a “bear skin,” mingle with celebrity bear makers and have a chance to win a BERNINA Simply Red sewing machine!  On display will also be our one of a kind collector Celebrity RARE Bears that will be part of a silent auction held during the Festival.  To RSVP for this event, sign up here: http://www.rarescience.org/beary-rare-affair-event/

The Quilt Show is hosting an Auction of Celebrity RARE Bears made by Becky Goldsmith, Jamie Fingal and Sue Bleiweiss during the RARE Bear Affair in Houston.  They’ll also be displayed in the RARE Science booth Nov 2nd – 6th.  Non-Attendees will be able to bid online at:  https://www.charityauctionstoday.com/auctions/rare-science-celebrity-bear-auction-944

Volunteers are always needed to make RARE Bears using the Simplicty Pattern #C5461.  You can make complete bears, or the bear casing that gets stuffed by others.  Of course you can do this by yourself, but you may want to host your own RARE Bear Party and invite your quilting and sewing friends.  This would also make for a great guild event!  rarebearpattern

You can also donate fabrics, stuff bears that have been premade, cut fabric, as well as help fund materials.  Simply contact Rare Science and let them know how you would like to help and find out what might already be in place in your area for this program.  You should be able to find this pattern in any store that sells Simplicity patterns, but you can also order it online from Simplicity

Help Aurifil With Support For Italy

We’ve all heard the sad news about the devastating earthquake in Central Italy, which hit this past week.  Many lives have been lost, plenty of homes, businesses, and church structures have been destroyed.  Help is needed in just about every way possible.  While volunteers are arriving to help, more is needed and help will be needed for a very long time.

As this earthquake hit in the middle of the night, those that were able to get out often were able to do so with only the clothes that they were wearing.  They are displaced without money, credit cards, blankets, clothing, etc. and living in very rough camping facilities.

I learned that Aurifil has created a way that quilting and sewing enthusiasts can help and I want to heighten awareness of this with you today.

Today, I have a special treat as Wendy Sheppard (Ivory Spring) has been creative with one of the designs included in the downloadable PDF Mandala Collection, designed for doodlers, and those that enjoy free-motion quilting and other creative people.

Wendy was super creative and shared her Mandala doodle/Zentangle design, as well as how it looked stitched out with beautiful Aurifil thread.   I absolutely love it and hope you do too!

Wendy will also be using this Mandala sketch and free-motion quilting stitch out in an “Thread Talk” article that she’ll be sharing on her blog this coming week.If you are not familiar with Wendy’s blog (Ivory Spring), or her “Thread Talkseries, where she shares insights on free-motion quilting, I highly encourage you to follow her blog. She is a FMQ Expert, Designer, Author and Teacher with amazing creativity.  I can honestly recommend her online classes with Annies, as well as her wonderful books published with Landauer Pub.

Week #3 – #StitchAlong – easy peasy table runner, or share any project you wish to make with Maureen’s Mandala PDF and/or Machine Embroidered design collection.

MY MANDALA TABLE RUNNER PROJECT

I’m absolutely thrilled how easy and fun it was to make a table runner using the downloadable PDF Mandala design collection, by Maureen Russell of Beautiful Embroidery Designs for free-motion quilting a Mandala in the center and her Justin’s Magic Mandala Machine Embroidery Collection.

I turned four of the Mandala machine embroidery designs into applique circles and stitched to the table top, before quilting.  I also used 1 layer of Warm and Natural batting, on top of 1 layer of Insul-Bright to create my quilt sandwich.  It was a fun and fast project.  Unfortunately, my camera does not do the beauty of these Mandala designs justice.

I’m now planning other projects with for these collections.  Follow me on Instagram this week, to see me #StitchAlong, #DoodleAlong, #FMQAlong.  I’m going to play with my Inktense pencils, which when you add water, they become permanent on cotton.  I’ll be using the PDF Mandala templates to mark my fabric, color, free-motion quilt, to make some zippered pouches for gifts, but the possibilities are endless for what you can create with these designs.

MY MANDALA TABLE RUNNER PROJECT

I used the downloadable PDF Mandala design collection, by Maureen Russell of Beautiful Embroidery Designs for free-motion quilting a Mandala in the center, with diamond cross hatch in the background.  I thoroughly enjoyed stitching out the Mandala design and I’m already looking forward to using this PDF Mandala collection on quilts and other projects.

I’m working on a table runner project that will incorporate Justin’s Magic Mandala embroidery designs and the complimentary Mandala PDF templates, which I will use as a template to mark for free-motion quilting.  I’ve stitched out four of the machine embroidery Mandala designs, onto 7″ squares.

Using EQ7, I created a 6″ circle template.  Today, I’ll sew a one sided a
lightweight adhesive stabilizer and trim these embroidered squares to create a circle applique that I’ll place on my table runner.

I selected one of the Mandala designs, from the Mandala PDF templates collection, for my free-motion quilting:

I’ll transfer this mandala template for FMQ in the center of my table runner today, as well as create my circle applique shapes, applique them, sandwich and hopefully start my free-motion quilting this afternoon.  Can you visualize how it will look?

Follow me on Instagram and I’ll share pictures as I #DoodleAlong, #StitchAlong, and #FMQAlong this week.  Of course, I hope you’ll join me.

Sneak Peek: International Craft Month Kick Off Celebration and a Charity Fundraiser #StitchAlong #FMQAlong #DoodleAlong to benefit Cystic Fibrosis

Today I’m excited to share insights with you about events I’ll be hosting in March, to celebrate International Craft Month.bee creative kick off badge

Tomorrow, March lst,  several blogging friends are joining me in a kick-off event to Celebrate International Craft Month.  We’ll  be sharing tips, tutorials and inspirational projects to help get you in the mood to take time to be crafty in March.  I want to recognize and thank Aurifil, Fat Quarter Shop, Martingale, Dragon Threads, ASF Lighting/Beam N Read ,  The Wooden Bear, Timeless Treasures, and Fons & Porter for sponsoring this event.

We have 21 prizes to giveaway and everyone can enter by simply visiting one or all of the blogs.  Come back tomorrow to get the line up, see the prizes, as well as find out about an easy craft project that can help you organize your craft room.

Every Saturday in March, I’m hosting a Linky Party for a Charity Fundraiser to benefit Cystic Fibrosis.  This will be a virtual party where you can doodle (e.g. on paper, or what ever), free-motion quilt, use mixed media, or machine embroidery and share what you create via our open Linky Party, to help inspire and encourage others.  Think of it as a #DoodleAlong, #CreateAlong, #FMQAlong, #StitchAlong Party all month long.

The fun will be using beautiful Mandala designs by Maureen Russell, of Beautiful Machine Embroidery Designs.  To clarify, Maureen has created machine embroider designs as well as templates that can be downloaded via PDF format, for those that wish to use these Mandala designs for doodling on paper (or whatever), as well as use for free-motion quilting, or mixed media arts.

The possibilities of what you can create  are endless, but technically you need not create anything to help. And all proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
