Sewing Teddy Bears – Sewing Hope

Many of us know that a quilt can provide great comfort to those dealing with various life challenges, just as sewn animals.  But I find it amazing and heartwarming when I hear about young people who go above and beyond to make things to provide such comfort to strangers.  Sewing Hope, is one story that should not be overlooked and I want to share it with you today:

Campbell, a 12 year old boy, looks at sadness and tries to turn it upside down, making hundreds of teddy bears for sick children.

Sewing Hope

"He looks at sadness and tries to turn it upside down".12 year old Campbell spends his time making hundreds of teddy bears for sick children. Get out the tissues.

While I tried to make contact with young Campbell, to find out if there is a way those interested could donate supplies and/or money, I was not able to do so.  Still, I wanted to share this heartwarming story.

bee creative charity fundraiser

Today I want to thank those of you who have helped Maureen Russell, of Beautiful Embroidery Designs, to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as increase awareness of CF.  For those that have purchased virtual raffle tickets, by way of donating funds and/or purchase of Maureen’s PDF Mandala templates or her Justin’s Magic Mandala Embroidery Designs – thank you!  And, for those that may be interested in helping, while Maureen will continue year round to raise such funds, the Bee Creative Charity Fundraiser, hosted by QuiltShopGal, will come to a close in a few days. Thus, if you want to purchase virtual raffle tickets, to win prizes (great odds too), you need to do so quickly as such tickets will only be available in March.  To clarify, Maureen will  be giving me a list of those who made such donations in March, I’ll assign virtual raffle tickets, as appropriate, and coordinate a drawing for the 20+ prizes and announce the winners next week!

I also want to recognize and thank the Sponsors for this event, as they donated amazing prizes:  AurifilMartingale, Dragon Threads, ASF Lighting Solutions/Beam N Read, Fat Quarter Shop, Schiffer Publishing,  The Wooden Bear and Sweet Peas and Angels.

Look at the beautiful doodling Cindy Needham created, using the PDF Mandala templates, from Maureen Russell, that are available as a fundraiser to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation:  Doodling these templates are great for cards, bookmarks, book covers and more, but doodling is also a fun way to build your free-motion quilting skills.

Bee Creative – A #StitchAlong, #FMQAlong, #DoodleAlong Linky Party – Charity Fundraiser with amazing prizes

Welcome to week two of our Bee Creative #StitchAlong, #FMQAlong, #DoodleAlong and Charity Fundraiser to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

bee creative kick off badgeEveryone is invited to share any form of creativity using any Mandala theme design in our Linky Party this month.  You may want to doodle, zentangle, paint, color, free-motion quilt, embroidery, etc., your Mandala designs.  You can use  Mandala designs from books, Pinterest, etc.  Of course, I hope to inspire you to purchase a collection of beautiful downloadable PDF format Mandala designs, or a machine embroidery collection, from Maureen Russell of Beautiful Embroidery Designs as 100% of your purchase is donated to the CF Foundation (and you’ll also get a virtual raffle ticket to win prizes in our Bee Creative Charity Fundraiser).  But what ever you do, I hope you’ll have fun creating this month and share any Mandala theme creations with us.

bee creative party

If you are not familiar with Linky Parties and how to use this tool, or you are a non-blogger, please read prior FAQ posts before you try to add a link. If you still have questions, email me and I’ll try to answer your question and walk you thru what you need to do.  But think of this as a virtual #CreativeGoodness Linky Party that is opened all of March.  Of course, I encourage everyone to click thru to visit the bloggers and non-bloggers that share their various Mandala projects, as I’m sure you’ll find inspiration in their sharing.

Today, I want to share what I’ve been doing and hopefully inspire you to join me and create anything you want, with a Mandala theme.

MY DOODLING

I’ve had fun doodling and coloring greeting cards.  I used the downloadable PDF Mandala design collection, by Maureen Russell of Beautiful Embroidery Designs.  This coming week, I’d like to do some Zentangle doodling, as well as use the new iCraft Deco Foils to make some fun note cards and bookmarks.

How would you doodle or color Mandala designs?

20160312_082938

MY STITCHING:

I’m working on a table runner project that will incorporate Justin’s Magic Mandala embroidery designs and the complimentary Mandala PDF templates, which I will use as a template to mark for free-motion quilting.  I’ve stitched out four of the machine embroidery Mandala designs, onto 7″ squares.

20160312_082907

Using EQ7, I created a 6″ circle template.  Today, I’ll sew a one sided a
lightweight adhesive stabilizer and trim these embroidered squares to create a circle applique that I’ll place on my table runner.

20160312_082925

I selected one of the Mandala designs, from the Mandala PDF templates collection, for my free-motion quilting:

20160312_082950And I opted to enlarge it 133%.

20160312_082957

I’ll transfer this mandala template for FMQ in the center of my table runner today, as well as create my circle applique shapes, applique them, sandwich and hopefully start my free-motion quilting this afternoon.  Can you visualize how it will look?

20160312_083053

Follow me on Instagram and I’ll share pictures as I #DoodleAlong, #StitchAlong, and #FMQAlong this week.  Of course, I hope you’ll join me.

How Does A Quilter Help Fight Cancer? Check out this great way you can help!

Natalia Bonner (Piece and Quilt) is an amazing quilter, designer, teacher and author. She is also a daughter, who recently learned her mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Natalia actually learned about it, via a text, while she was teaching at Road to California in January.

Natalia has created some very interesting quilt designs where 100% of the purchase goes to help with her mother’s medical expenses.

Both designs will help you create a beautiful 72×72″ finished quilt and each pattern is only $5.  They come with easy to follow instructions that include great visuals. I bought both and I’m looking forward to making these quilts, while sending positive thoughts and prayers for Natalia’s mother.  Of course, I’d love to see what you create with these designs too.  But even if you don’t create, you’ll be giving a wonderful virtual hug of support to Natalia and her mother.

For more info visit Natalia’s blog post about when she learned her mother’s news and wondered what she could do to help?

Sneak Peek: International Craft Month Kick Off Celebration and a Charity Fundraiser #StitchAlong #FMQAlong #DoodleAlong to benefit Cystic Fibrosis

Today I’m excited to share insights with you about events I’ll be hosting in March, to celebrate International Craft Month.bee creative kick off badge

Tomorrow, March lst,  several blogging friends are joining me in a kick-off event to Celebrate International Craft Month.  We’ll  be sharing tips, tutorials and inspirational projects to help get you in the mood to take time to be crafty in March.  I want to recognize and thank Aurifil, Fat Quarter Shop, Martingale, Dragon Threads, ASF Lighting/Beam N Read ,  The Wooden Bear, Timeless Treasures, and Fons & Porter for sponsoring this event.

We have 21 prizes to giveaway and everyone can enter by simply visiting one or all of the blogs.  Come back tomorrow to get the line up, see the prizes, as well as find out about an easy craft project that can help you organize your craft room.

Every Saturday in March, I’m hosting a Linky Party for a Charity Fundraiser to benefit Cystic Fibrosis.  This will be a virtual party where you can doodle (e.g. on paper, or what ever), free-motion quilt, use mixed media, or machine embroidery and share what you create via our open Linky Party, to help inspire and encourage others.  Think of it as a #DoodleAlong, #CreateAlong, #FMQAlong, #StitchAlong Party all month long.

The fun will be using beautiful Mandala designs by Maureen Russell, of Beautiful Machine Embroidery Designs.  To clarify, Maureen has created machine embroider designs as well as templates that can be downloaded via PDF format, for those that wish to use these Mandala designs for doodling on paper (or whatever), as well as use for free-motion quilting, or mixed media arts.

The possibilities of what you can create  are endless, but technically you need not create anything to help. And all proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

charity fundraiser #StitchAlong Justin's Magic Mandalas

Sponsors for this Charity Fundraiser include:  AurifilMartingale, Dragon Threads, ASF Lighting Solutions/Beam N Read, Fat Quarter Shop, Schiffer Publishing,  The Wooden Bear and Sweet Peas and Angels.

As a charity fundraiser, this virtual event will have a variety of options to enter. Entries to win prizes are based on donations of $10 AU (about $7 US) for each virtual raffle ticket entry.

Examples:

  • Purchase and download PDF templates of Mandala designs that you can use for doodling, free-motion quilting, or mixed media designs – possibilities of what you can do with these designs are endless.  These downloadable PDF files will be available at Beautiful Embroidery Designs on March lst.  Each $10 AU purchase qualifies as one virtual raffle ticket entry.
    • You need not stitch or doodle anything in March, using these templates, but we hope you will do so and share via a linky Party that QuiltShopGal will host in March.  These Mandala designs are perfect for doodling, as well as free-motion quilting.
  • Purchase the Mandala machine embroidery designs, by Maureen Russell, at $50 AU (about $35 US) to get three virtual raffle
    • You need not stitch anything in March, but QuiltShopGal will be hosting a #StitchAlong in March for these designs, showing how to make a table runner or wallhanging, but the possibilities are endless for what you can create with these designs.  And, participants will be encouraged to share their progress via a Linky Party in March.
  • Make a donation via PayPal, for any amount you wish to help raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  For simplicity, donations can be made to (what is Maureen’s PayPal email address), but must be tagged as “Cystic Fibrosis Charity Fundraiser” in the comments.  For every $10 AU that you donate in March, you’ll be awarded a virtual raffle ticket to win prizes.

note:  While QuiltShopGal is hosting this fundraiser, all funds raised will go thru Maureen Russell, or her Beautiful Embroidery Designs site.  She’ll compile a list of those that make general donations for CF by way of her PayPal account, those that purchase the PDF Mandala templates, as well as those that purchase her beautiful Justin’s Magic Mandala embroidery design collections. And, she’ll provide me the names of such individuals and I will issue them virtual raffle tickets to win 20+ prizes generously donated by sponsors.

PR Angeles that can help spread the word about this charity fundraiser are greatly appreciated.  Don’t forget you may have non-quilting friends that might want to donate to help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, by making a donation in your name, whereby you could win the quilty prize!  So be sure to let all your family and friends know!  And, for bloggers that wish to help increase awareness, you have my permission to copy and share any of the info and images in this post, that you wish.

Don’t forget to this event starts on Saturday, March 5th.  But you can visit Beautiful Embroidery Designs to purchase the Mandala machine embroidery design collection anytime between now thru the end of March to obtain virtual raffle tickets.  If you want to purchase the PDF Mandala templates for doodling, free-motion quilting, mixed media art, etc., you can contact Maureen.  I’ll also share once she has these files set up for purchase via her online store.  Lastly, don’t forget you can contact Maureen if you wish to make a general donation to CF, thru her PayPal account, but get virtual raffle tickets to win prizes.

I do hope you’ll enjoy March and find time to be crafty!

A Book Review, Charity Fundraiser, Giveaways, Blog Hop, Quilt A Long: Moda Row by Row

I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to share quilty insights with you today for the Moda All-Stars All In A Row: 24 Row-by-Row Quilt Designs, Giveaways, Blog Hop and Quilt A Long.

PUBLISHERS INSIGHTS:

Discover the mix-and-match possibilities for fabulous quilts with row patterns by your favorite Moda designers, including Lissa Alexander of Moda Lissa, Lynne Hagmeier of Kansas Troubles Quilters, Camille Roskelley of Thimbleblossoms, Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts, Pat Sloan, and many more.

Final_01-112_B1352.indd

  • 24 row designs in three appealing categories: Classic Patchwork (tried-and-true favorites), Well Seasoned (fresh quilts for every season), and A Bit of Whimsy (playful, carefree designs)
  • Perfect for a row-robin quilt-along with your friends, the rows can be put together in many different combinations
  • Includes step-by-step instructions and illustrations, plus a quilt gallery that provides inspiration for various combinations and using stand-alone rows

Final_01-112_B1352.inddDon’t forget, while Martingale rarely needs to issue a correction to any of their books, if there are such, you can find the information on their website. For this book, there is a minor cutting correction for the Twinkle design.

MY REVIEW:

First, I’ll confess I love Row Quilts, often called “skinny quilts” as row quilts can also be used to make table runners, wallhangings and much more by simply making only one or two rows, or you can make enough rows to complete a quilt.  And the various Rows often have a theme, and there “blender” rows can also be incorporated to provide a nice visual separation between the rows, adding more interest to the overall quilt design.

24-Blender-Rows-designed-by-Lissa-Alexander-of-ModaLissa

This is the  first book that I’ve seen packed with beautiful row designs (24) that you can pick your favorite to create a stunning quilt that is uniquely yours.

Final_01-112_B1352.indd

Rows range in height (6″, 8 5/8, 9″, 9 1/2″ 10″), but are all 48″ finished. And all of the ROW patterns come with easy to follow instructions that include great visuals. There is also an inspirational gallery section that shares photos of projects made from designs in this delightful book.

Final_01-112_B1352.indd

I am confident this quilt is going to help quilters of all levels have fun creating beautiful quilts.  It would also be perfect for a quilt guild challenge, or friendship group that wants to consider a round robin type of event (e.g. each round adds another row to a quilt top, before it is passed to the next quilter).

Final_01-112_B1352.indd

I hope you get a chance to check out this book at your favorite quilt shop, but don’t forget if they don’t have it you can let them know you’d like them to carry it as it is so new they may not have even heard about it.  Of course, you can also check it out online at Martingale, as well as Amazon.  And those that follow along the blog hop this month, will definitely learn more about this book.

DID I MENTION A QUILT ALONG/CHALLENGE?

Moda and Martingale are hosting a Quilt Along/Challenge where you could win lots of books and fabric.  Simply buy the book, make a row (or enough to make a quilt) and share a photo of your project on any social media tool using hashtag #allinarowquiltalong

DID I MENTION A GIVEAWAY?

For those that follow along the blog hop for this book in January, you’ll find all sorts of giveaway opportunities to win books and fabric.  QuiltShopGal is also hosting a giveaway where one lucky follower, anyplace in the world, will win a copy of this book.  To enter, use the Rafflecopter Form below where you can claim one or more entries, keeping in mind it really only takes one entry to win, but as there are those that like to increase their odds, I’ve included a variety of options to enter.

I also want to recognize and thank Elizabeth (Libby) Hemming, as a Postage Angel who has donated money to help supplement postage expenses for prizes that QuiltShopGal needs to  ship directly to winners in 2016.  Thanks to Libby for covering 100% of the shipment of this prize to an US winner.  I also want to clarify, Postage Angels are still eligible to enter any giveaway/contest hosted by QuiltShopGal and have the same odds of randomly being selected to win, as non-Postage Angel participants.

I do want to clarify, as announced earlier this year, due to continuing postage rate increases, International winners will not receive free shipping in 2016.  If they wish to enter a giveaway and claim their prize they will need to donate $20 US, as a Postage Angel.  If actual postage is greater QuiltShopGal will pay the difference and if it is less, the extra funds will go into a postage expense account, to help supplement expenses for future shipping of prizes.   Sadly, the US Post Office just raised rates 5% AGAIN this week.

Happy New Year – Goals and Plans for QuiltShopGal in 2016

happy new year clip art

There is something special about a New Year, as refreshing and fun as a clean chalkboard for you to sketch out your dreams.  You may have the same goal, the same dream, that you carry into the new year, or you may start with completely different goals.  My personal focus is to look forward, although I do spend time looking back at the year prior, as I establish my new goals.

Today I want to share insights with you on my goals and plans for 2016.  Of course, I hope they will inspire you to follow QuiltShopGal, but I also reserve the right to change my plans throughout the year.  A little more or less of this and that, if you catch what I mean.

MY WORD for 2016 continues to be #CreativeGoodness.  While Quilting, Sewing and Embroidery are my favorite forms of creativity, I do want to continue to explore and encourage and admire many forms of creativity.

RESEARCH AND REPORTING is a core thread of QuiltShopGal and will continue to be so in 2016.  I am currently researching several topics, that have taken me months to thoroughly research, but I hope to be sharing these soon.  I also plan on getting back on track with my “Designer Showcase Series“.

CHARITY FUNDRAISERS AND PAY-IT-FORWARD KINDESS  – I plan to host a couple of charity fundraisers, as well as help with acts of Pay-It-Forward Kindness.  The first Charity Fundraiser will be hosted in March, to benefit Cystic Fibrosis programs around the world, with an emphasis on an excellent program in Australia.  Sneek Peaks on this fundraiser will be shared in January.

  • Cystic Fibrosis

charity fundraiser #StitchAlong Justin's Magic Mandalas

  • Pets in Shelters/Homeless Animals – also need helping hands from quilting, sewing and embroidery enthusiasts WW.
  • Heaven Sent a new non-profit focused on providing quiltlets to wrap babies that have passed away cover caskets for such babies.

FREE-MOTION QUILTING CHALLENGES AND STITCH-ALONGS

Stitch A Long Template Leah Day

ENGLISH PAPER PIECING STITCH A LONG – summer 2016 – While I have a couple of different EPP designs I’ll be showcasing, this event will be open for sharing any EPP project you are making, or have made, in 2016.  Simply needs to be an EPP project.

UFO / JUST FINISH IT CHALLENGES – I’m shooting to host 2-3 UFO Challenges in 2016.  Some will be focused on FMQ and some focused on any project you wish to share, they just need to be finished in 2016.

MACHINE EMBROIDERY STITCH A LONGS

  • Lunch Box Quilt Designs – Recipe Towel Collections
  • Kaleidoscope Kreator – Feathers Embroidery Collection
  • Sarah Vedeler – GO! BeDazzled or Stars Collections.  While I have a couple of projects I’ll be using these collections for, this #StitchAlong (like other Stitch A Longs) are open for any sharing that you create using these collections.   What do you think about these motifs for a table runner, pillow or quilt?

SKILL BUILDING CHALLENGES AND STITCH A LONGS – in addition to Free-Motion Quilting, I plan to host a few events that will help us build our skills for:

  • Precision Piecing Stitch-A-Longs & Challenges
  • Electric Quilt Skill Builders & Challenges – we’ll also be celebrating EQ’s 25th Anniversary this year, during these events.

AFFILIATE PROGRAMS AND POSTAGE ANGELS – To better manage my personal quilting budget, which historically has been negatively impacted by shipping prizes and giveaways, in 2016 I plan to:

  • Continue utilizing Affiliate programs, for businesses and products that I can honestly recommend.  When you click thru any of my blogs to make a purchase, you pay the same as you would have if you went direct to that site, but I “may” receive a small fee back that I use to supplement postage costs.
  • Those that opt to pay-it-forward, by reimbursing me for postage, as well as those that make postage donations, will be recognized in future giveaways and announcement of prizes, where their funds are used to help with postage expenses.
  • As US postage cost has increased, International postage has skyrocketed.  The cost of shipping a book typically exceeds the price of the book, often 7-10 times the cost of what it would cost to shipping within the US.  While I could limit winners to be US only, this year I’m going to ask that International winners “donate” a flat rate of $20, as a Postage Angel, for any prize that they wish to claim.  To clarify, should postage of their prize exceed this rate, I will pay the difference and if the cost is less, the extra amount simply goes into the postage budget to pay-it-forward, with the winner being recognized as a Postage Angel.

Again, I wish you a very Happy and Healthy New Year. I also wish you time to enjoy and create.

Charity Quilt Raffle to Benefit Heaven Sent

Today, I want to share insights about a heartwarming new charity program that I am hoping quilters and others, will embrace with compassion and want to help.  There are a variety of easy ways to help, but first I want to share a few insights about what this new non-profit’s mission is all about.   And, while I rarely share personal insights on my blog, I want to share why this personally means so much to me.

This new non-profit charity program is called “Heaven Sent” (aka Pitter Patter Babies Matter).  I learned about it from Barb Gaddy of Bejeweled Quilts, by Barb.  If you know Barb you know she is not only a great quilter, but someone who gives from the heart.  She has a cousin, Tracy, who is a Funeral Home Director and Tracy had been giving small caskets for these babies, as well as free funerals when Barb began making small baby quilts.  This grass roots charity program decided to make the commitment to make this a national program, thus taking the steps this year to become a non-profit.  They need volunteers to help with rolling out to your area, as well as donations of small quilts and money to help with the start up expenses of non-profit status, website, etc..

Bringing comfort and meaning
to the life and loss of a child.

MISSION:

Heaven Sent, Corp’s mission is to assist grief recovery by providing Pitter Patter swaddling and keepsake blankets through our Pitter Patter Funeral Home Partnering Program, to bereft mothers who have suffered pre-term or infant loss under the age of one year.  This program promotes grief healing and recovery by creating a bond for the surviving mother to her lost child, offering tangible proof that the baby was real and existed, delivering comfort and security that the baby was a significant addition and tragic loss to the surviving family, and solidifying the birth space the baby occupies within the family structure, guaranteeing that the baby has significance and will never be forgotten.

GOAL

Heaven Sent, Corp. families through the immediate loss of their babies by providing a physical link to the infant through a swaddling blanket for the baby’s burial or cremation and a coordinating keepsake blanket square for the surviving mother through our Pitter Patter Funeral Home Partnering Program for pre-term loss and infants under the age of one year. Our goal is to offer grief recovery assistance and change the accepted perception of a pre-term loss from a non-loss to a profound loss; and an infant loss from an insignificant loss to a very real and deeply profound loss, thereby affording the bereft family recognition in their grief, along with significance of their baby’s existence.

Here is the beautiful quilt that is being raffled off this month, to help raise funds for this new non-profit.  This quilt was made by Barb Gaddy of Bejeweled Quilts by Barb.

Raffle tickets are only $1 and 100% of the funds go to help this non-profit offset expenses for obtaining non-profit status, as well as launching a much needed website.  You can purchase your raffle tickets via PayPal (or other arrangements directly with Barb Gaddy).  If you do not have her email or PayPal info, please leave a comment and I will send you this info directly.

You may also want to consider becoming a Blanketear Ambassador.  Basically, volunteer quilters are needed to make small quilts that can be used to wrap these small babies in, as they are given to their parents for one last time to hold, as well as to cover them in their coffin, or even drap over their coffin during their funeral.  Regional coordinators are also needed to help coordinate quilter activities in their respective areas, along with supplying hospitals and funeral homes with these quilted blankets.  Click here to sign up as a Blanketear Ambassador.

MY PERSONAL STORY:

My mother had a difficult time getting pregnant, as a young woman.  She had several miscarriages and needless to say, when she finally got pregnant and carried to term, both of my parents were delighted.  Unfortunately, my older brother was strangled by the umbilical cord and died a few days after birth.  My mother had difficulties talking about his death her entire life and the times she would slightly mention it, was under the context of how careful one needs to be during pregnancy.  She probably always held a guilt that she did something wrong during her pregnancy.  Now, as an adult, I still look at pregnancy seriously and realize the importance of good medical care, eating right, careful exercise as you are taking care of two people.

Sadly, like many of us, I’ve also had some close friends that carried to term what they thought was a healthy baby, to have that baby die during birth, or within a few days afterwards.  I know that they will grieve for that child for the rest of their lives, yet there are few opportunities to ever discuss such pain with others.

While a small quilt may be a small gesture, it does bring great comfort to those dealing with such a loss.  It will never bring their child back, but it is a gesture of comfort and love that they can also opt to bring home that small quilt and hug in, as they hold the memories and broken hope and dreams of that child in their hearts for the rest of their life.

This is why I’m so passionate about Heaven Sent and I hope you will have the compassion to help to. While you may already be busy helping with other charity quilts, consider that the numbers for Heaven Sent will certainly be lower as fewer quilts will be needed and the quilts for this charity will certainly be smaller.  Maybe you know a Quilt Guild, or other quilters that would want to help.  Spreading the word is a great way to help.  Of course, every $1 donation also helps to get this new non-profit up and running.
