Call for Quilts – #QuiltsForVegas

Thanks to Christa Watson for sharing a post on her blog (Christa Quilts), which caught my attention for #QuiltsForVegas.

The Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild has a call for #quiltsforVegas and today I’m trying to heighten awareness and ultimately encourage quilters and quilt guilds to participate.  Help is needed to make and donate quilts, even quilt blocks that will be turned into quits.  But I also suspect that more ways to volunteer would be appreciated (e.g. donation of batting, fabrics, longarm skills, etc.).  Help is also needed to contact your guild board members, even local quilt store owners, to see if they can help rally volunteers for this very worthwhile cause.

The Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild has stepped forward to help quilters, from around the world, help give much needed quilty hugs to  get quilts to the victims and first responders.    Using block patterns from Cluck Cluck Sew, using the 10 inch finished block size, where a heart block (located anywhere in the quilt), will certainly provide the recipient a good quilty hug of comfort. Grayscale blocks, in any arrangement along with one heart block somewhere on the quilt. They want you to use 2 fabrics in each block; white and a happy contrasting color but feel free to mix it up however you like!

I love the cheerfulness from these quilts.

The easy to sew design is also very versatile.  There is no right or wrong.  And, the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild is also open to receive quilts from other designs that could offer good quilty hugs and comforts to those impacted by the Las Vegas shootings.

If you have questions email:

Don’t forget, help is needed to increase awareness for this call for quilts #quitsforvegas  – you can make a difference by helping to spread the word.  Let your quilt guild, quilt shop owners and quilting friends know.  Even making a quilt block for this cause can make a difference, but the word needs to get out to let people know how they can help spread much needed quilty hugs to those impacted by the shootings in Las Vegas.

Craftsy Class Review – The Quilter’s Path: Plan It, Stitch It, Quilt It, with Christa Watson

Today I’m delighted to share insights about a new class on Craftsy, called “The Quilter’s Path: Plan It, Stitch It, Quilt It“, with Christa Watson.  This is definitely an excellent class for newbies to free-motion quilting, but also a great opportunity for those that might want to lean some fun and fast techniques for incorporating your walking foot with free-motion quilting designs.  Christa shares plenty of tips and inspiration, that will help you plan out how to quilt your projects and get them finished.

Christa Watson is an award-winning sit-down machine quilter, designer, teacher and author.  She’s the author of two books: “Machine Quilting With Style” and “The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting.”   She also enjoys traveling to teach at quilt shows, quilt shops and to quilt guilds.

You can quilt it yourself on your sewing machine! Join quilter Christa Watson and discover simple techniques for machine quilting with a walking foot or free-motion stitches. Along the way, learn the most efficient way to travel around your quilt as you quilt it.

Students get a free downloadable pattern for the “Pinwheels quilt pattern” designed by Christa.  This is a fun and fast quilt design, which Christa uses to show you how to quilt in this class.  Of course, you can use a practice sandwich, as well as apply the designs on any project you wish, but this is a great design that I think many will be inspired to create and use for the FMQ lessons in this virtual class.

Here is a summary of the six lessons provided in this class.  Don’t forget, like all classes at Craftsy, you can take these classes at your leisure, start/stop/repeat according to your schedule and interest.

Christa kicks off this class with this lesson providing a great Introduction, as well as insights on using a Walking Foot vs Dual-Feed, selecting Fabric Thread and Warming Up, as well as stitching Wavy Lines.

In this lesson, Christa shows us a variety of beautiful walking foot designs: straight lines, shattered lines, decorative lines, continuous spirals, square spirals.  She also shares a collection of her inspirational quilts and discusses the quilting designs she applied to create interest and texture.

Great lesson for the basics of free-motion quilting, Christa’s  favorite supplies, with plenty of FMQ tips to help you quilt your quilt, as well as designs in this lesson:  loop designs, fun loops for single, double and triple loops, loops & flowers.

Building on your skills acquired in the previous lessons, in this lesson you’ll learn how to create a large variety of free-motion quilting designs:boxes, switchbacks and swirl motifs with plenty of variations of each family of designs (e.g.  ribbon candy. crazy eights, etc).

Christa shows how fun it is to combine free-motion quilting designs in this lesson, where she teaches you a variety of swirl combinations, Woodgrains and waves, and improv designs.  I also love her inspirational quote “Aiming for texture vs perfection”.

In the final lesson, Christa covers combining walking foot and free-motion quilting techniques. She also shares insights for planning your quilt using an approach called “divide and conquer”, one section at a time to add texture. She shares several quilt samples and shares insights on how she quilted them to add texture, while combining designs taught in this class.

This is an absolutely perfect class for beginners, as you will learn how to quilt your projects using a walking foot and free-motion quilting techniques.  But I think it is also a good class for those with experience that may want to round out their skills, and learn more tips and designs.  It is a fun class packed with inspiration, tips, as well as beautiful and easy walking foot and free-motion quilting designs that can help you quilt your quilts with traditional or modern designs, as you desire.

Christa shared a link so new students can get 50% off the class using this link, which is valid through 4/4/17:

Lastly, while Christa will be teaching at the upcoming QuiltCon East, her classes are sold out.  But she is holding a meet ‘n greet/book signing at QuiltCon on Friday, February 24, from 12-1 in the Electric Quilt Company booth # 337. Copies of her books will be available for purchase and it’s a great chance to stop by and say hi.

The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting and a Giveaway

In this must-have resource, long-arm-quilting expert Angela Walters and home-sewing-machine specialist Christa Watson team up to provide the ultimate guide for machine quilters. Gain insight into long-arm quilting, as well as guidance on quilting at a sit-down sewing machine. Whichever machine you use, you’ll find warm encouragement and expert tips to help you every step of the way.

  • Find out why some designs and motifs are ideal for sit-down quilting while others are better suited to long-arm quilting
  • Packed with tips, tricks, and advice on how to machine quilt better, you’ll learn everything you need to know to get started confidently and finish strong
  • Learn from the masters as you discover how to stitch a wide range of quilting designs, with instructions for 10 quilts

Christa Watson:  From Las Vegas, Nevada, is an award-winning sit-down machine quilter, Christa Watson has had designs featured in such magazines as Quilty, The Quilting Quarterly, Modern Quilts Unlimited, Make Modern, QuiltCon, and various other publications. She designs quilt patterns, teaches workshops, and is an active member of the Modern Quilt Guild, the National Quilting Association, and the American Quilter’s Society. Christa enjoys being a wife to her husband and a mom to her three kids, who all think it’s normal to have a house full of fabric.

You can find Christa at:

Angela Walters: From Kearney, Missouri,  Angela is a long-arm quilter, teacher, and author. Her quilting career began at the side of her husband’s grandfather, and together they made her first quilt, a nine-patch design that is still on her bed today. Thousands of swirls, feathers, and parallel lines later, she has turned her love of stitches and fabric into a thriving business focused on modern machine quilting. Angela also designs fabrics. She lives on the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri, with her husband, three children, and many, many quilts.

You can find Angela at:

This innovative approach to writing a quilting book I think will certainly influence the style of many books in the future. It walks you thru every step, every design, showing two different perspectives, by two very talented quilters.

This book is also perfect for quilters with a variety of interests:  Want to learn/improve your free-motion quilting skills on a domestic or long arm machine ?  Want to learn when, where and why certain designs and motifs are better suited to long-arm machines or sit-down machines?  This book will help you be a better quilter.  If you don’t feel you are interested in learning free-motion quilting, don’t overlook this book as I’m sure you’ll still find it to be a great resource.

There are ten super creative and fun quilt patterns included in this book, each with easy to follow instructions and great visuals.  They range in size from  41″ x 27 1/2″ to 80 1/2″ x 90 1/2″

Here is an example of what makes this book so innovative.  Throughout the book you’ll find both Christa and Angela share their perspective on a topic (e.g.. tools of the trade, marking, FMQ motifs, quilts  and more).  Here is an example where they each share insights on “Choosing Colors”.

This book is packed with more free-motion quilting motifs (and how to stitch them) than I’ve ever seen in any other FMQ book.  Plus there are so many more tips and tricks.  This, combined with the ten patterns included in this book, makes it an exceptional value and I honestly feel it is a “must have” for anyone interested in learning/improving their FMQ skills, as well as those that are interested in creating wonderful projects provided in this book.

I hope you get a chance to check this book out at your favorite quilt shop.  But if you don’t see it, don’t forget to let them know you are interested in having them make it available.  It is such a new book, they may not be aware of it.  Of course, you can also find this book online at Martingale, as well as Amazon.

Also, over the next ten weeks Christa will be sharing one of the quilt designs each week, by sharing two quilts: one made by Christa and one made by Angela.  Check out her post this week to see “Choosing Colors”, which is a super fun and creative design, as all of the designs in this book are.

Martingale has kindly offered to give an ebook copy to one of my followers.  If you are interested in winning a copy, please use the Rafflecopter form below.  While there are a variety of ways to enter, it really only takes one entry to win.
