The Ultimate Quilting Challenge – Wrap Up

ultimate quilt challenge badge

The Ultimate Quilt Challenge was created to encourage quilters to learn/improve their free-motion quilting skills.  While any free-motion quilting style or motif could be used, the core focus of this challenge was to incorporate any of the versatile Ultimate Quilting Stencils, which have been designed by Cindy Needham, a Master Free-Motion Quilting Expert.  Participants in this challenge could share a project previously completed that incorporated any of these stencils, quilters could use the downloadable  Master Templates to sketch out and share ideas they’ve created on paper or electronically, or the final option to enter, was to stitch out any project, any size, any style, any design, using any of the Ultimate Stencils, but do so during the summer of 2016.

Today I’m thrilled to share photos from some of the participants. I strongly believe all of the entries were absolutely beautiful and I hope that they inspire you to learn/improve your free-motion quilting skills, as well as see the versatility of using the Ultimate Quilting Stencils.  I also want to encourage you to click thru to visit these blogs, as the participants shared more photos and insights and many have more posts for inspirational FMQ, as well as working with the Ultimate Stencil Collections.

Karen of the Quilt Yarn shared an amazing whole cloth quilt which she had previously created, using some of the stencils from various Ultimate Stencil Collections.   Her project measures 35″x35″ and incorporates the original Ultimate Stencil Collection, as well as some hyperquilting techniques from Patsy Thompson.

Anna of Anna’s Quilting Studio shared her doodle/sketch ideas for designs using some of the Ultimate Stencils.

Karen of the Quilt Yarn shared a variety of doodle/sketch ideas using various Ultimate Stencils.  Karen has also shared a number of blog posts showing more stunning design ideas that she has sketched on paper, but recently she has also been sharing tips for using software for creating electronic sketches for various FMQ motifs appropriate for blocks, or wholecloth quilts.

Patty D of A Stitch N Time also shared inspirational doodle/sketch design ideas.

Kearstie of KB’s Quilting  shared her sketch designs, which incorporated some of the Ultimate Quilting Stencils.  And she shared a lovely project she stitched out with this design this summer.

Laura of Laura Luvs Loons shared sketches with us, for her design idea that incorporated some  of the Ultimate Quilting Stencils. She applied FMQ  ideas to a Vintage Linen to create a stunning table runner which she stitched out this summer.

Vicki of Fabric Under Foot shared her sketches with us, which incorporated some of the Ultimate Background Stencils.  And while Vicki is still stitching out this lovely project, she shared with us a photo show how much she has progressed this summer.

While I think anyone that uses any of the Ultimate Stencil Collections is a winner, as they truly are so versatile and help you create stunning free-motion quilting, the Ultimate Quilting Challenge has announced winners.  Congratulations to:  Karen of the Quilt YarnAnna of Anna’s Quilting Studio, Patty D of A Stitch N Time,  Kearstie of KB’s QuiltingLaura of Laura Luvs Loons and Vicki of Fabric Under Foot.  While we didn’t have that many participants in this Challenge,  those that did participate certainly shared inspirational ideas and projects.  Thank you.

RULES TO ENTER THIS CHALLENGE:

  • Bloggers and non-bloggers are eligible to enter:
    1. Bloggers need to share their entry in a current post, dated during this event (links to old posts will be removed).  Not required, but appreciated if you also let others know about this Ultimate FMQ  Challenge and include a link in your post.  Of course, you can share more than one doodle/sketch design idea with as many photos and insights as you wish to share, but only one link per person.
    2. Non-Bloggers have a variety of ways to share, but they need to ensure that they only share one link in the linky post. Depending on the tool you use to share, you can reference that you are participating in this event and clarify if you have additional photos that can be viewed. For example, if you upload to Flickr you can link one picture, but share more via a folder, just be sure your security is open to anyone to view.  You can also share via uploading to Pinterest, or other free online sites, but you do need to ensure the site you upload your photo entry is open so that anyone can view it.  To eliminate the risk of having your link deleted, consider asking others to check for you.
  • You can only share doodle/sketch design ideas that you have sketched on paper using The Ultimate Stencil Collection and/or The Ultimate Background Stencil Collection.  But you can incorporate any FMQ motif with these stencil designs that you wish.  To clarify, you need not stitch your ideas out on fabric.
  • When you share a project in any of the three Linky Parties for this event you are giving permission for QuiltShopGal and Cindy Needham to share a picture of your project, to recognize you, on our blogs, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram accounts.
  • Prizes will be randomly awarded the last week of September.

OTHER LINKY PARTIES PLANNED FOR THIS CHALLENGE:

  • LINKY PARTY #1 – VIRTUAL QUILT SHOW – PROJECTS MADE PRIOR TO THIS CHALLENGE can be shared in a Linky Party that kicked off June 15th.  Projects can be any size, any style, but need to incorporate the FMQ based on The Ultimate Stencil Collection and/or The Ultimate Background Stencil Collections. And, of course, you can incorporate any FMQ design with these stencils that you wish.
  • LINKY PARTY #3 – VIRTUAL QUILT SHOW – PROJECTS MADE THIS SUMMER Kicks off August 15th, with a Linky Party, for those that create a project, of any size, any style this summer and show that you have used one or more of the stencils, from the Ultimate Stencil Collection, by Cindy Needham.  Don’t overlook the fact you can start working on your project now, as  you need not wait to August 15th to start!
  • VOTING FOR YOUR FAVORITE Quilts (from all Linky Parties during this event) will be held the week of September 19th.
  • Prizes randomly awarded the last week of September.

To clarify all entries must incorporate The Ultimate Stencil Collection and/ or The Ultimate Background Stencil Collection, by Cindy Needham. For sketching and doodling everyone can dowload the FREE handout from Cindy, which includes the Master circle and square template from the Ultimate Stencil Collection, which you can copy and use to doodle/sketch out FMQ design ideas from Cindy, shared by others, and hopefully also create your own design ideas to share in this challenge.

The design possibilities are endless with these stencils.   Cindy also has a great collection of inspirational ideas for these stencils on Pinterest.

Golden Quilter Awards giveaway

Excuse my absence, it seems that the party for the Golden Quilter Awards just didn’t want to end.  I finally gave up, but I think there are still some winners and fellow quilters that are still celebrating.  But, I was able to sneak away and want to share a few insights about the party.  While, I’ve already announced the winners of the 2012 Golden Quilter Awards, I thought you’d be interested in learning what participants received prizes that were donated by our very generous sponsors of this event.

First, I want to share how much I loved visiting with those that attended the ceremony and party.  It was also a blast to see all the outfits that people wore to the party.  Judy Chain (Sew Fun Quilts) wore some super cute silver rhinestone encrusted tenny shoes!  Shame I forgot my camera.  If you were able to get any pictures, of “One Crazy Quilter” dancing on those tables,  please let me know!

Black Friday/Cyber Monday Holiday Shopping

Last year, about this time, I compiled a list of products that I thought would make great Christmas gifts.  This year, I decided to do some research on Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping for quilting, sewing and embroidery enthusiasts, as well as share insights on some products that I think would make great Christmas gifts.

I believe most everyone is aware that Black Friday (sometimes Green Friday) is a term used to refer to the point in the year where merchants typically feel they are now profitable and Cyber Monday is a day where online sales tend to be at their highest point of the year, at least in the US.  No matter what the definition is, this window tends to be the busiess shopping days of the year.  Unfortunately, I don’t have any Market Research to determine how this all applies to businesses focused on quilting, sewing or embroidery.  So, I set out to do some research on my own and much of this post shares insights with you about some Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales that you might be interested in.

Warning:  This is a long list, but I do think it is worthy of checking.  And, I’ve also included a list of my recommendations for Christmas gifts to quilting friends (or yourself).

SUBMISSION PROCESS

Bloggers will be able to to enter this show by posting their entry on their blog, via a post dated November 14th-21st, and linking their post to the respective mcklinky at the top of this post.  One blog post per blogger, where you can include photos and insights on one or more of your Christmas quilts.  SewCalGal also appreciates if in your blog post, you share insights that you are entering your quilt(s) in the Christmas Quilt Show and include a link back to this post, hopefully encouraging everyone to also have fun viewing all the quilts in this show, in addition to yours.

Non-Bloggers enter their quilts via email, with steps where SewCalGal manually creates a post for each of these entries.  Due to this being a manual step, a deadline was previously announced and has now passed.  But, I’m willing to open up this opportunity for a maximum of 10 more entries, if received by November 20th.  Thus, if you are a non-blogger and want to  be able to enter this show you can email SewCalGal photo of your entry, with brief description.

While this is a Christmas Quilt show, entries are accepted if they are a quilt of any size (includes skinny quilts, aka table runners), have a Christmas or Hanakuh theme, and are quilts or fibre arts.  Entries are also accepted for quilt designs, with approved themes, that are designed in EQ6/EQ7.  For quilt design entries, SewCalGal does ask that bloggers post on their blog, as stated above, and also email their EQ6/EQ7 design.

RULES  (you can do one or more of any of these to enter to win a prize.  To clarify, you do not need to enter a quilt to be able to enter to win a prize. But it certainly will be more fun if you enter a quilt in the show).

1) Enter a quilt(s) in this show and you’ll be entered to win a prize.  To clarify, one post/link per blogger/person, but you can include more than one quilt in your entry, as long as it meets the theme of the show (e.g. Christmas or Hanakuh).

2) Leave a comment on this post and you get an entry (or, for some, an extra entry).

3) Post the badge for this event and you’ll be eligible for one entry. {SewCalGal appreciates PR helpers}.

4) Blog about this event and you’ll be eligible for one entry. To clarify, this is an option to get an extra entry for those that helped with PR prior to the start of the show and helped to blog about this event, or if you do not have a quilt to enter and want to blog about it to help with PR.  But it isn’t a way for getting an extra point if you enter in the show this week and also create an extra PR post this week.

5) Visit all the quilt entries in this show, as submitted between Nov 14-21, leave a comment on the participating site’s entry,  and you’ll be eligible for an additional entry.  Just come back and leave a comment on this post, lettting me know you’ve viewed all the quilts entered in this show, before noon on the 22nd and you’ll get an extra entry.

6) SewCalGal followers get an extra entry.

7) If you “have been” part of QuiltSue’s (Quilt Times) Christmas Quilt-along in 2010, you get an extra entry.

As I’ll be using a random number generator to select winners, and each comment has a number, please enter a separate comment for each entry you qualify for.  Thank you!

Prizes will be awarded to a blend of those that enter the show vs viewers vs PR helpers, etc. all randomly select at the end of the show. Drawing for prizes will be completed late on the 22nd or early on the 23rd and announced via a post on this blog, no later than the 23rd.  An email will also be sent to each of the winners, where they will have 4 days to respond via email to claim their prize, otherwise another winner will be selected.  IF you have a preference for a particular prize, you may want to include the # of the prize (or your favorite 3 prizes) in your comment(s).  I can’t guarantee, but I’ll try to do the best I can to match prizes to winners’ interest.

No reply bloggers/no reply comments will not be accepted, unless they contain an email address for how to be contacted.
