Fat Quarter Shop – Classic & Vintage Quilt Series – Free Jacob’s Ladder Pattern

The Fat Quarter Shop  has kicked off a free quilt-along event today, called the Jacob’s Ladder Classic & Vintage Quilt Series.  I’m participating in this QAL and I hope you will join the fun too!

FQS shows off a beautiful collection of fabrics by Jo Morton, with Moda Fabrics, called  Reflections Fat Quarter Bundle which they use for their Jacob’s Ladder.  It certainly makes for a very beautiful quilt, with a classic look and feel that is absolutely perfect for the Jacob’s Ladder design.

The free FQS pattern for Jacob’s Ladder pattern has been written for using fat quarters.   It is an easy to follow pattern, with great visuals. And, it provides fabric requirements and instructions to make a table topper, Lap quilt, as well as twin or queen size quilt.

While you can make a stunning quilt with a  Reflections Fat Quarter Bundle  fat quarter bundle, this quilt will look great using almost any fat quarter bundle, or like me, you could easily adapt this pattern to use yardage.

While I do love the Reflections Fat Quarter Bundle, I also fell in love with the Old Glory Stonehenge Fat Quarter Bundle and I hope to use it to make another Jacob’s Ladder quilt. but in a lap top or twin size.

But, I ended up with a plan to create a Jacob’s Ladder quilt with a variety of blues and greys to create a nautical feeling.   As I couldn’t find a fat quarter bundle, in the colors I wanted to use, I opted to use yardage for this project.   I’m making the “queen size” Jacob’s Ladder and still have more blocks to finish, but I wanted to share how my quilt is progressing.  I have the majority of the pieces stitched and I’m working on assembling my blocks.

I hope you’ll check out this classic pattern and join the fun sew-along too!  You can more info on the “Jolly Jabber blog today,  where you’ll be able to watch a excellent video tutorial  by Kimberly, with plenty of helpful tips for precision piecing, as well as find a link to download the free pattern.  There are also links to several bloggers who are participating in this sew-along and sharing their project/WIP with you today.   Stay tuned, as I’ll share more on how my Jacob’s Ladder comes together, as well as how I quilt it (pretty sure I’ll be using rulers for FMQ).

Don’t forget to go visit the Jolly Jabber blog, where the Fat Quarter Shop will share more insights on this free pattern and sew-along.

Happy Holidays

While I rarely share personal info, I can honestly say I love all the holidays.  Yes, I love Hanukkah, the Ramadan celebration, and many more holidays, but I don’t ever want to lose sight of celebrating Christmas, as well as wishing those that celebrate this holiday a Merry Christmas.   What ever holiday you celebrate, I hope it is a happy one for you and your family.  I also wish for you a very happy and healthy New Year, with time to enjoy and create.

I want to thank and recognize all of the sponsors for our recent “12 Days of Christmas Giveaways”.  All of the winners have been announced, notified and their special Christmas gifts are in the process of being shipped.  While I had hoped that this would have been done so that these gifts would arrive in time to open on Christmas, the “Grinch” hijacked my website and the downtime created a delay.  But the lucky winners will receive their prize very soon.

Thank you to all of our generous sponsors:

Lastly, I’d like to ask a special favor of you.  Diane Gaudynski is an amazing award winning quilter, Master free-motion quilter, teacher and author.  She retired a few years back from teaching and rarely updates her blog.  She just released another blog post and I believe she’d love to hear from you.  Thus, I hope you can take a few moments to pop over to her blog and leave some kind words to share good Holiday cheer with her.  You can find her blog at:

Note:  I was late getting this post out so in stead of one day to enter, everyone has 48 hours.

Pets on Quilts Show 2016 – Who Loves Pets?

Today’s post is all about pets, as Lily Pad Quilting has kicked off the Pets on Quilts Show.  I hope you’ll have as much as I do learning about all the pets, as well as enjoy the beautiful quilts, that are shared in this super fun virtual show.

I’ll confess I could easily become the Crazy Old Pet Lady, as I love almost every type of pet, in every shade and every color.  I’m just not home enough to be a good pet parent, so I need to get my “pet fix, aka pet love” by being around pets of family, friends, and neighbors.  I’ve seriously thought about posting “FREE” pet sitting services, even willing to travel to do so!

Meet Lily, a 14 year old yellow Labrador.  She belongs to my brother-in-law and has the best temperament, with eyes that are so sweet and thoughtful.  Although, her eyes really looked guilty when I coached her up on the bed (my BIL had never let her on top of the bed before).    She liked a little snuggle time, before she’d go sleep in her own bed, for the night. And, I understand she’ll now do this with my BIL. To clarify, he is now letting her get a little snuggle time before they both go to sleep.  I’ll confess the quilt isn’t mine, but one that was on the guest bed at my BIL/SIL’s home this summer.  Note to self: I think I need to make them a quilt.

Lily absolutely loves fresh fruits and vegetables. I had a blast taking her on walks and picking blackberries for her. I think she thought it was great too. While she can eat them off the bush, she does it every so carefully to avoid the thorns.  I could pick a hole handful for her in less time, so she learned to wait for me to pick them for her.  But her favorite treats are watermelon, strawberries, or tomatoes.  It is amazing how her nose gets so excited when she smells them.

Sorry for the long post, but I also want to take time to heighten awareness of Pets living in shelters that need loving fur-ever homes.  And the shelters need help.

Here is a sweet video showing a shy shelter dog flipping out when he realized he’s found some a home:

If you have a problem viewing this embedded video, here is a link to watch it directly in Youtube:

Pet Shelters need all sorts of volunteers from helping to walk the dogs, play with the cats, singing to the birds, grooming horses, etc.  And shelters also appreciate donations of easy to make  pet beds, so animals don’t have to sleep on concrete floors and can get a better night sleep.  There are a variety of free patterns to make pet beds and many work well with scraps of batting:

Aurifil released the Small Kennel Quilt Thread Kit last year, as a fundraiser for the Petfinder Foundation.  This kit contains 10 spools of 50 wt thread, with 200 yards each.

Help Aurifil help TQPM care for homeless pets. Buy an Aurifil Small Kennel Thread Kit and a portion of each sale will be donated to Petfinder.  And, if you don’t find them in your favorite quilt shop I hope you can let them know you’d like them to help support this effort to help TQPM.

Petfinder is an online, searchable database of animals who need homes. There overall Mission, is to increase awareness and ultimately the adoption of pets in need of forever homes.

This new charitable thread kit can be purchased wholesale through Checker.

I also want to give a shout out that you can find this kit at the Fat Quarter Shop

I hope you’ll visit Lily Pad Quilting and enjoy all the entries for the Pets on Quilts Show.  Of course, I’m hoping that you’ll share your pet (or borrowed pet) on your quilts, or maybe a animal theme quilt.  The more sharing the more fun.  Here is a link to this party:

Quilt Qwazy Queens Blog Hop – Are you A Quilt Qwazy Queen?

Marian of Seams to be Sew is hosting a super fun event to celebrate International Quilting Day and it goes all week long!  She has lined up a great group of bloggers, with some generous sponsors who have donated amazing prizes that will be given away daily, throughout this event.

I absolutely love the theme that Marian (Seams to be Sew) picked for this blog hop.  I’ll confess I have many non-quilting friends that I’m sure think I’m totally crazy. Although, I think many would be willing to stand in line if I were offering them a chance to get a handmade quilt, or other handmade item.

How do you know if you are a Quilt Awazy Queen?

quiltshopgal clipart wordart

I think I’m a Quilt Qwazy Queen as I get so focused that I sometimes can’t stop making the same, or similar design, or working with similar fabrics.  The majority of my quilting is charity quilts.

Duck Duck Goose Quilts (5)

I must have made 20+ baby/toddler quilts using Duck Duck Goose fabrics, and other scraps from my stash. Each quilt was completely different. In the end, I still had oodles of blocks and matching fabrics that I gave to a Linus Coordinator, to make more. But I was tired of working with these fabrics, although it was fun to figure out ways to use scraps of various sizes and colors, as well as incorporate machine embroidery designs and free-motion quilting.

two duck duck goose quilts

I often pick fabrics from my stash and punch thru making as many charity quilts as I can.  I’ve had quilt blitz periods for flannel quilts, pastel quilts, as well as kid friendly prints.  For me, mass-production of charity quilts can be a great way to help a great cause, as well as be efficient with our supplies and time.  But I’ll confess I reach a point, where I get tired of working with the same fabrics and colors.

On a personal basis, I enjoy making quilts using a variety of techniques.  But Hawaiian applique quilts, completely stitched by hand, have always been my favorite.  I’ve made many king, queen, twins, laps and wallhanging quilts using a variety of Hawaiian designs, some with historic designs.

Hawaiian Periwinkle Quilt (4)

While I enjoy hand piecing, hand applique and hand quilting, I also enjoy machine piecing, free-motion quilting and threadplay.  This spring, I’m wanting to finish this Spring theme applique quilt, which I’ll donate to a fundraiser to benefit Animal Shelters, once I have it finished.  I’m visualizing finishing it with quite a bit of threadplay, using various weights and colors of thread, as well as free-motion quilting and machine applique’.

But, before I start another project, I plan to finish a Mandala theme table runner that I’ve created during the “Bee Creative Charity Fundraiser, to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation“, which I’m hosting this month.  There is an open linky party where anyone can share any Mandala theme creativity, to inspire others.  Plus, generous sponsors have donated  prizes where you can purchase a virtual raffle ticket to enter to win 20+ prizes and all proceeds benefit CF.

I hope you have fun in the Quilt Krazy blog hop and find many inspirational ideas.  Marian has done a fantastic job coordinating this fun event and I’m honored to be a stop in this hop.  I definitely want to encourage all my followers to visit the other bloggers in this hop, as well as to enter the various daily giveaways to win great prizes.

I also want to heighten awareness that the Fat Quarter Shop is giving everyone who purchases something at their shop at 10% discount. When you check out, just use the coupon code of: seamstobe316    note:  This discount is not good on gift certificates.

Marian arranged for each blog, participating in this event, to host a unique giveaway.  Plus there are daily giveaways that you can enter at Seams to Be Sew.  And, the very talented Marian is also giving away free designs and her designs are always amazing.  Is this a great way to celebrate International Quilting Day or what ?

Today, I’m hosting a couple of giveaways, thanks to Marian for coordinating this:

Sneak Peek: International Craft Month Kick Off Celebration and a Charity Fundraiser #StitchAlong #FMQAlong #DoodleAlong to benefit Cystic Fibrosis

Today I’m excited to share insights with you about events I’ll be hosting in March, to celebrate International Craft Month.bee creative kick off badge

Tomorrow, March lst,  several blogging friends are joining me in a kick-off event to Celebrate International Craft Month.  We’ll  be sharing tips, tutorials and inspirational projects to help get you in the mood to take time to be crafty in March.  I want to recognize and thank Aurifil, Fat Quarter Shop, Martingale, Dragon Threads, ASF Lighting/Beam N Read ,  The Wooden Bear, Timeless Treasures, and Fons & Porter for sponsoring this event.

We have 21 prizes to giveaway and everyone can enter by simply visiting one or all of the blogs.  Come back tomorrow to get the line up, see the prizes, as well as find out about an easy craft project that can help you organize your craft room.

Every Saturday in March, I’m hosting a Linky Party for a Charity Fundraiser to benefit Cystic Fibrosis.  This will be a virtual party where you can doodle (e.g. on paper, or what ever), free-motion quilt, use mixed media, or machine embroidery and share what you create via our open Linky Party, to help inspire and encourage others.  Think of it as a #DoodleAlong, #CreateAlong, #FMQAlong, #StitchAlong Party all month long.

The fun will be using beautiful Mandala designs by Maureen Russell, of Beautiful Machine Embroidery Designs.  To clarify, Maureen has created machine embroider designs as well as templates that can be downloaded via PDF format, for those that wish to use these Mandala designs for doodling on paper (or whatever), as well as use for free-motion quilting, or mixed media arts.

The possibilities of what you can create  are endless, but technically you need not create anything to help. And all proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Sponsors for this Charity Fundraiser include:  AurifilMartingale, Dragon Threads, ASF Lighting Solutions/Beam N Read, Fat Quarter Shop, Schiffer Publishing,  The Wooden Bear and Sweet Peas and Angels.

    • You need not stitch or doodle anything in March, using these templates, but we hope you will do so and share via a linky Party that QuiltShopGal will host in March.  These Mandala designs are perfect for doodling, as well as free-motion quilting.
  • Purchase the Mandala machine embroidery designs, by Maureen Russell, at $50 AU (about $35 US) to get three virtual raffle

note:  While QuiltShopGal is hosting this fundraiser, all funds raised will go thru Maureen Russell, or her Beautiful Embroidery Designs site.  She’ll compile a list of those that make general donations for CF by way of her PayPal account, those that purchase the PDF Mandala templates, as well as those that purchase her beautiful Justin’s Magic Mandala embroidery design collections. And, she’ll provide me the names of such individuals and I will issue them virtual raffle tickets to win 20+ prizes generously donated by sponsors.

Merry Christmas – My Personal Christmas Wish and #NightsBeforeChristmas Winners

Did you have a special Christmas Wish?  I hope it came true.  And I wish for you happiness, good health and time to enjoy and be creative always.

While I personally feel very blessed, I want to share my special wishes this holiday season.  I hold each of these in my heart and prayers:

  • Angela Walters, an amazing quilter, teacher, author who has given so much to make our world of quilting so much fun, also comes from a quilty family.  Her brother, a fellow quilter, is also a Policeman with the Kansas City Police Department.  Unfortunately, he was seriously injured on December 10th, while off duty, and remains in critical condition in ICU.  While I previously posted about the call for prayers (and donations), I continue to carry Nate, Angela, and their extended family in my heart and prayers daily.  If you are not familiar with what happened, I hope you’ll click thru to read a post I released sharing such insights.
  • Many in Australia have just lost their home due to fires that are raging with the high temperatures this region of our world is experiencing.  My heart and prayers go out to those that have lost their homes, the firemen who risk their lives to help and for all of those impacted by these terrible fires.
  • There are many that are fighting cancer, or other serious illnesses and some are in the quilting business, making it very difficult to earn an income when you are not feeling well.  My heart and prayers go out to them.  The men and women serving their US and our allies, who are off in a war zone, as well as away from home during the holidays.  Again, my heart and prayers for these soldiers and support groups.

As I do believe it doesn’t take much to make a Happy Holiday, I find pleasure in emails, phone calls, and/or visits with family and friends very much during this time of year.  I also thoroughly enjoy holiday music and wanted to share one of my favorites with you today:

nights before chistmas party

First, I want to thank our sponsors for this event:  Aurifil, Martingale, The Warm Company and Laundauer Publishing.

I also want to thank everyone that shared Winter/Christmas theme giveaway, freebies, and/or tutorials in our Linky Party for this event, helping to share fun and creativity.

Now, time to announce all the winners for the various giveaways hosted during this event:

Lastly, I hope you are having a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season.  Let’s all try to carry the spirit of Christmas in our hearts throughout the year.
