Our Precision Piecing Quilt-Along – Wrap Up

Before I wrap up the Precision Piecing Quilt-Along, by thanking sponsors and announcing winners, I want to let everyone know that QuiltShopGal migrated to a new (and cheaper) web hosting service.  It was supposed to have happened over a weekend, a week ago.  There was a point that I thought QuiltShopGal was going to die a quick death, long before I could complete all I wanted to do.  Thanks to Marian Pena of Seams to Be Sew, for her help and encouragement during this migration.  I still have a few pending issues in the migration, but now have email back up and running, as well as the ability to release new posts.  Woo hoo!

note:  my address remains www.quiltshopgal.com

So, today, I want to wrap up the Precision Piecing Quilt Along.    I hope to have inspired others to challenge their piecing skills with small blocks and seek out perfect cutting and piecing, to get us to slow down and improve our piecing skills.  There are a variety of ways to improve our precision piecing skills, but stitching small blocks is truly a great way to do so.  And, Hope’s Quilt Designs has many beautiful mini-block patterns that you can download for free.

I want to recognize our generous sponsors who made this event more fun, by donating wonderful prizes:  The Fat Quarter ShopThe Quilt Show and Martingale

I also want to share that ALL of the participants in this event, who are bloggers, were also added to My Creative Blog List, which is a great site to follow super creative blogs.  I hope all bloggers and non-bloggers check it out.  I have found this to be a great resource to follow a variety of creative blogs and I’m hearing from others that agree.

TIME TO ANNOUNCE THE LUCKY WINNERS:

The Fat Quarter Shop  donated a $50 gift certificate.

#PrecisionPiecingQAL – Week Three

Welcome to week three of our #PrecisionPiecingQAL.  Everyone has time to make a mini-block, with a free downloadable pattern designed by Hope’s Quilt Designs (links available in kick-off post).  You just need to make at least one block, to enter by March 19th, as I’ll be announcing the winners next week.

This event is sponsored by:

The Fat Quarter Shop

The Quilt Show

Martingale

While many have made one, or more, of the free miniature quilt blocks, some have repeated the same block, to further improve their precision piecing skills, getting better results each time they make a mini-block.  And, some have turned their blocks into miniature projects:

Bea (Beaquilter) turned her blocks into a sweet pincushion.

Jan (non-blogger) shared this very creative quilt top she created using her miniature blocks.

Deadline to enter is March 19th.  I will be announcing the winners next week.

Here is our Linky Party for the Precision Piecing QAL.

Don’t forget this coming Saturday is Worldwide quilting day.

And, to help celebrate, The Quilt Show is allowing everyone FREE access to all their current and past episodes plus giving away ~$10k in prizes.

I hope you will take time to make a miniature quilt block this weekend, to practice your precision piecing skills, as well as celebrate International Quilt Weekend.  This is always one of my favorite weekends of the year.

byAnnie.com Placemat Quilt Along with the Fat Quarters Shop

Have you heard of Soft and Stable byAnnie.com ?  This is an amazing stabilizer far superior to battings and other stabilizers, which is absolutely perfect for bags and beyond!  Over the years, I’ve found a variety of uses for this product.  Thus, I was delighted to be able to join a Placemat Stitch Along, hosted by the Fat Quarter Shop, which kicks off today.  Of course, I hope you’ll join this fun event and also enjoy working with Soft and Stable.

While Soft and Stable comes in a variety of sizes, byAnnie has packaged it in a perfect size for making placemats.  In their “Project Pack“, you get four pieces of 13.5″ x 18.5” which are still a good size for a variety of projects, but absolutely great for placemats.  Plus, the package comes with a bonus pattern where you can make super easy placemats with various size strips of fabric.

Here is a great visual that shows how well a bag made with Soft and Stable stands up vs one made with regular batting.  You get that same type of stabilization when you use this product to make a placemat, or other project.    Plus, it retains a soft and cozy feeling to it.

While the Project Pack comes with a free pattern that will help you make cute placemats, using a quilt as you go technique, I opted to use some left over blocks from the #JacobsLadderQAL.

You can easily quilt-as you go or stitch in the ditch.  I’ve also found that Soft and Stable can look great with some light free-motion quilting or some Ruler Work, but I it has such great body that you really don’t need to do much quilting to create a great looking project using Soft & Stable.

Possibilities of what you can create with Soft and Stable are endless.  Consider using a Project Pack to create placemats, small bags, zipper pouches, mini-quilts, mug-rugs, etc..

I hope you’ll pick up some Soft & Stable from the Fat Quarter Shop and come join us in this fun #StitchAlong.  For more insights and inspiration, visit the Jolly Jabber blog today.

#PrecisionPiecingQAL – The Fat Quarter Shop

Welcome to week two of our #PrecisionPiecingQAL.

Today I want to inspire everyone to work on their precision piecing skills by highlighting some great opportunities available thru the Fat Quarter Shop, as well as share some projects that some of our participants have made with their miniature blocks made during this challenge.  To clarify, you need not make anything with these miniature blocks to enter to win prizes, but for those that want to not just use this QAL as a technique learning opportunity, but to create, the possibilities are endless.

fatquartershop-circle-300x300

The Fat Quarter Shop shares a wealth of helpful tutorials that can help quilters, including those wanting to improve their precision piecing skills.  Here are a few which I highly recommend:

And, the Fat Quarter Shop also has very helpful notions:

  • ByANnie stiletto –   useful to hold fabric down as you sew as you get close to the needle
  • Creative Grid rulers –   easy to read markings and non-slip backs so you can cut precisely
  • Triangle paper – get exact units, especially when working with bias edges
  • Rotating mat – move the mat, not the fabric, when cutting
  • Ideal Seam Guide – set yourself up for success with accurate seams

MINIATURE PROJECT SHARING

Amanda Best (PatchworkPrincess82) shared all her blocks, as well as this beautiful miniature quilt which she made, on Instagram.

Barbara (Cat Patches) shared insights on her creative blog, about the blocks she made and how she turned them into a miniature quilt, which she plans to use as a hot pad in her camper.  I thought it was cute she named this project “At a Minimum”.

Still plenty of time for you to make a miniature block (or more) to enter to win prizes from our generous sponsors:  The Fat Quarter Shop, The Quilt Show, and Martingale.  It only takes one entry for a chance to win a prize, but of course, I hope you’ll use this QAL as an opportunity to improve your precision piecing skills.  So, if you don’t feel your miniature block is perfect, make more till you get it right.  There are a variety of free patterns that you can use, all listed in the kick off post for this event.  But do let me know if you have any questions.

Deadline to enter is March 19th.

Here is our Linky Party for the Precision Piecing QAL.

Don’t forget this coming Saturday is Worldwide quilting day.  I sure hope you find time to enjoy and quilt.  Always fun to quilt with friends, even virtually.

And, The Quilt Show is also opening up all their shows to everyone to watch this weekend, as they also have plenty of episodes & more, to help you improve your piecing skills..  More info on my prior post for this event.

Riley Blake has a free downloadable PDF with really good basic tips for precision piecing.

This QAL allows you to work on one, or all mini blocks, designed by Hope (Hope’s Quilt Designs) which you can download from Craftsy for free.  Just stitch out a block and share via the linky tool, before March 15th 19th, to enter to win prizes.  Here are the mini blocks by Hope:

You can finish your mini-block how ever you wish. You may want to make several and create a mini-quilt, or mug rug.  You could even turn one into a cute zipper pouch.  Possibilities are endless.  But this QAL is really all about learning/improving your precision piecing skills by making these sweet mini-quilts.

Bloggers and non-bloggers can join this QAL.  Of course, I appreciate it when bloggers use the badge (from this post) and encourage others to join too!  I also appreciate it if everyone can use the hashtag #PrecisionPiecingQAL when sharing on any social media tool.  Non-bloggers can link to their photos shared via Pinterest, Flickr, etc., so long as it is viewable to others.  And, you can link as often as you wish.  Very flexible to enter, but do let me know if you have any questions.

Fat Quarter Shop – Classic & Vintage Quilt Series – Free Jacob’s Ladder Pattern

The Fat Quarter Shop  has kicked off a free quilt-along event today, called the Jacob’s Ladder Classic & Vintage Quilt Series.  I’m participating in this QAL and I hope you will join the fun too!

fatquartershop-circle-300x300

FQS shows off a beautiful collection of fabrics by Jo Morton, with Moda Fabrics, called  Reflections Fat Quarter Bundle which they use for their Jacob’s Ladder.  It certainly makes for a very beautiful quilt, with a classic look and feel that is absolutely perfect for the Jacob’s Ladder design.

The free FQS pattern for Jacob’s Ladder pattern has been written for using fat quarters.   It is an easy to follow pattern, with great visuals. And, it provides fabric requirements and instructions to make a table topper, Lap quilt, as well as twin or queen size quilt.

While you can make a stunning quilt with a  Reflections Fat Quarter Bundle  fat quarter bundle, this quilt will look great using almost any fat quarter bundle, or like me, you could easily adapt this pattern to use yardage.

While I do love the Reflections Fat Quarter Bundle, I also fell in love with the Old Glory Stonehenge Fat Quarter Bundle and I hope to use it to make another Jacob’s Ladder quilt. but in a lap top or twin size.

But, I ended up with a plan to create a Jacob’s Ladder quilt with a variety of blues and greys to create a nautical feeling.   As I couldn’t find a fat quarter bundle, in the colors I wanted to use, I opted to use yardage for this project.   I’m making the “queen size” Jacob’s Ladder and still have more blocks to finish, but I wanted to share how my quilt is progressing.  I have the majority of the pieces stitched and I’m working on assembling my blocks.

I hope you’ll check out this classic pattern and join the fun sew-along too!  You can more info on the “Jolly Jabber blog today,  where you’ll be able to watch a excellent video tutorial  by Kimberly, with plenty of helpful tips for precision piecing, as well as find a link to download the free pattern.  There are also links to several bloggers who are participating in this sew-along and sharing their project/WIP with you today.   Stay tuned, as I’ll share more on how my Jacob’s Ladder comes together, as well as how I quilt it (pretty sure I’ll be using rulers for FMQ).

Don’t forget to go visit the Jolly Jabber blog, where the Fat Quarter Shop will share more insights on this free pattern and sew-along.

Happy Holidays

While I rarely share personal info, I can honestly say I love all the holidays.  Yes, I love Hanukkah, the Ramadan celebration, and many more holidays, but I don’t ever want to lose sight of celebrating Christmas, as well as wishing those that celebrate this holiday a Merry Christmas.   What ever holiday you celebrate, I hope it is a happy one for you and your family.  I also wish for you a very happy and healthy New Year, with time to enjoy and create.

I want to thank and recognize all of the sponsors for our recent “12 Days of Christmas Giveaways”.  All of the winners have been announced, notified and their special Christmas gifts are in the process of being shipped.  While I had hoped that this would have been done so that these gifts would arrive in time to open on Christmas, the “Grinch” hijacked my website and the downtime created a delay.  But the lucky winners will receive their prize very soon.

Pets on Quilts Show 2016 – Who Loves Pets?

Today’s post is all about pets, as Lily Pad Quilting has kicked off the Pets on Quilts Show.  I hope you’ll have as much as I do learning about all the pets, as well as enjoy the beautiful quilts, that are shared in this super fun virtual show.

I’ll confess I could easily become the Crazy Old Pet Lady, as I love almost every type of pet, in every shade and every color.  I’m just not home enough to be a good pet parent, so I need to get my “pet fix, aka pet love” by being around pets of family, friends, and neighbors.  I’ve seriously thought about posting “FREE” pet sitting services, even willing to travel to do so!

Meet Lily, a 14 year old yellow Labrador.  She belongs to my brother-in-law and has the best temperament, with eyes that are so sweet and thoughtful.  Although, her eyes really looked guilty when I coached her up on the bed (my BIL had never let her on top of the bed before).    She liked a little snuggle time, before she’d go sleep in her own bed, for the night. And, I understand she’ll now do this with my BIL. To clarify, he is now letting her get a little snuggle time before they both go to sleep.  I’ll confess the quilt isn’t mine, but one that was on the guest bed at my BIL/SIL’s home this summer.  Note to self: I think I need to make them a quilt.
20160726_212334

Lily absolutely loves fresh fruits and vegetables. I had a blast taking her on walks and picking blackberries for her. I think she thought it was great too. While she can eat them off the bush, she does it every so carefully to avoid the thorns.  I could pick a hole handful for her in less time, so she learned to wait for me to pick them for her.  But her favorite treats are watermelon, strawberries, or tomatoes.  It is amazing how her nose gets so excited when she smells them.

Sorry for the long post, but I also want to take time to heighten awareness of Pets living in shelters that need loving fur-ever homes.  And the shelters need help.

Here is a sweet video showing a shy shelter dog flipping out when he realized he’s found some a home:

If you have a problem viewing this embedded video, here is a link to watch it directly in Youtube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhGBg_OnrIQ

Pet Shelters need all sorts of volunteers from helping to walk the dogs, play with the cats, singing to the birds, grooming horses, etc.  And shelters also appreciate donations of easy to make  pet beds, so animals don’t have to sleep on concrete floors and can get a better night sleep.  There are a variety of free patterns to make pet beds and many work well with scraps of batting:

Aurifil released the Small Kennel Quilt Thread Kit last year, as a fundraiser for the Petfinder Foundation.  This kit contains 10 spools of 50 wt thread, with 200 yards each.

Help Aurifil help TQPM care for homeless pets. Buy an Aurifil Small Kennel Thread Kit and a portion of each sale will be donated to Petfinder.  And, if you don’t find them in your favorite quilt shop I hope you can let them know you’d like them to help support this effort to help TQPM.

Petfinder is an online, searchable database of animals who need homes. There overall Mission, is to increase awareness and ultimately the adoption of pets in need of forever homes.

This new charitable thread kit can be purchased wholesale through Checker.

I also want to give a shout out that you can find this kit at the Fat Quarter Shop

I hope you’ll visit Lily Pad Quilting and enjoy all the entries for the Pets on Quilts Show.  Of course, I’m hoping that you’ll share your pet (or borrowed pet) on your quilts, or maybe a animal theme quilt.  The more sharing the more fun.  Here is a link to this party:  http://lilypadquilting.blogspot.com/2016/08/pets-on-quilts-2016-its-here.html
