2012 Free-Motion Quilting Challenge – RE-CAP – September Challenge, with Paula Reid

 photo 2012FMQChallengeBadge4x6_zps2dba5c11.jpg

First, I want to recognize and formally thank Paula Reid, our September FMQ Expert for her wonderful tutorial.

Paula shared insights on her technique to “Fluff N Stuff” large quilts through a domestic sewing machine, along with insights on her favorite FMQ stencil, for circular feathers.

Everyone had fun learning and/or improving their FMQ skills using Paula’s tutorial.

At the point of writing this post, there are ~110 quilters that have completed this tutorial and entered to win a monthly prize.  (note: there are over 2,000 participants that have registered to complete this challenge, but only a small percentage enter the monthly challenges).  And many enjoy the ability to “master” these tutorials at their leisure vs rushing  to complete an exercise in the month it was released.

It is fun to look at all of they entries, as each of them are truly beautiful.  SewCalGal hopes everyone will be able to view all of the entries too!  There are also more photos, from those that have shared on our optional Facebook Group and/or the Flickr group.

Some have created beautiful projects already, from insights learned in this tutorial.

Quilters of all levels, from all over the world, are participating in this challenge.  While some have experience doing FMQ, many are quite new.  But, we all enjoyed Paula’s tutorial very much!  And many participants are already applying Paula’s insights, and designs shared in this tutorial to their projects.

On behalf of all the participants, SewCalGal and all of the participants want to extend a special thank you to Paula for providing us such a wonderful tutorial and inspiring us to learn and improve our free-motion quilting skills.

THANK YOU Paula!

The objective of the 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge is to encourage quilters to learn and improve their FMQ skills, as well as gain more awareness to various FMQ Experts, opportunities to learn, tools that are helpful for those doing FMQ, all on a home sewing machine. While the focus is on learning, and SewCalGal does not want the focus to become all about winning prizes, but I’m also delighted that many generous sponsors have donated wonderful Grand Prizes and Monthly prizes, that will be awarded to participants randomly. It doesn’t matter how good you are at FMQ, what matters is you take time to learn and improve.

Participants that do complete the monthly tutorial, in the month that it was released, and choose to enter per the rules on the original tutorial post, will be eligible to win a monthly prize.  For the September tutorial, there are eleven (11) prizes and the winners will be announced ~ mid-October.

I do want to recognize and thank our sponsors for this challenge:

Golden Quilter Awards giveaway

Excuse my absence, it seems that the party for the Golden Quilter Awards just didn’t want to end.  I finally gave up, but I think there are still some winners and fellow quilters that are still celebrating.  But, I was able to sneak away and want to share a few insights about the party.  While, I’ve already announced the winners of the 2012 Golden Quilter Awards, I thought you’d be interested in learning what participants received prizes that were donated by our very generous sponsors of this event.

First, I want to share how much I loved visiting with those that attended the ceremony and party.  It was also a blast to see all the outfits that people wore to the party.  Judy Chain (Sew Fun Quilts) wore some super cute silver rhinestone encrusted tenny shoes!  Shame I forgot my camera.  If you were able to get any pictures, of “One Crazy Quilter” dancing on those tables,  please let me know!

Thank you

Black Friday/Cyber Monday Holiday Shopping

Last year, about this time, I compiled a list of products that I thought would make great Christmas gifts.  This year, I decided to do some research on Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping for quilting, sewing and embroidery enthusiasts, as well as share insights on some products that I think would make great Christmas gifts.

I believe most everyone is aware that Black Friday (sometimes Green Friday) is a term used to refer to the point in the year where merchants typically feel they are now profitable and Cyber Monday is a day where online sales tend to be at their highest point of the year, at least in the US.  No matter what the definition is, this window tends to be the busiess shopping days of the year.  Unfortunately, I don’t have any Market Research to determine how this all applies to businesses focused on quilting, sewing or embroidery.  So, I set out to do some research on my own and much of this post shares insights with you about some Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales that you might be interested in.

Warning:  This is a long list, but I do think it is worthy of checking.  And, I’ve also included a list of my recommendations for Christmas gifts to quilting friends (or yourself).

SUBMISSION PROCESS

Bloggers will be able to to enter this show by posting their entry on their blog, via a post dated November 14th-21st, and linking their post to the respective mcklinky at the top of this post.  One blog post per blogger, where you can include photos and insights on one or more of your Christmas quilts.  SewCalGal also appreciates if in your blog post, you share insights that you are entering your quilt(s) in the Christmas Quilt Show and include a link back to this post, hopefully encouraging everyone to also have fun viewing all the quilts in this show, in addition to yours.

Non-Bloggers enter their quilts via email, with steps where SewCalGal manually creates a post for each of these entries.  Due to this being a manual step, a deadline was previously announced and has now passed.  But, I’m willing to open up this opportunity for a maximum of 10 more entries, if received by November 20th.  Thus, if you are a non-blogger and want to  be able to enter this show you can email SewCalGal photo of your entry, with brief description.

While this is a Christmas Quilt show, entries are accepted if they are a quilt of any size (includes skinny quilts, aka table runners), have a Christmas or Hanakuh theme, and are quilts or fibre arts.  Entries are also accepted for quilt designs, with approved themes, that are designed in EQ6/EQ7.  For quilt design entries, SewCalGal does ask that bloggers post on their blog, as stated above, and also email their EQ6/EQ7 design.

RULES  (you can do one or more of any of these to enter to win a prize.  To clarify, you do not need to enter a quilt to be able to enter to win a prize. But it certainly will be more fun if you enter a quilt in the show).

1) Enter a quilt(s) in this show and you’ll be entered to win a prize.  To clarify, one post/link per blogger/person, but you can include more than one quilt in your entry, as long as it meets the theme of the show (e.g. Christmas or Hanakuh).

2) Leave a comment on this post and you get an entry (or, for some, an extra entry).

3) Post the badge for this event and you’ll be eligible for one entry. {SewCalGal appreciates PR helpers}.

4) Blog about this event and you’ll be eligible for one entry. To clarify, this is an option to get an extra entry for those that helped with PR prior to the start of the show and helped to blog about this event, or if you do not have a quilt to enter and want to blog about it to help with PR.  But it isn’t a way for getting an extra point if you enter in the show this week and also create an extra PR post this week.

5) Visit all the quilt entries in this show, as submitted between Nov 14-21, leave a comment on the participating site’s entry,  and you’ll be eligible for an additional entry.  Just come back and leave a comment on this post, lettting me know you’ve viewed all the quilts entered in this show, before noon on the 22nd and you’ll get an extra entry.

6) SewCalGal followers get an extra entry.

7) If you “have been” part of QuiltSue’s (Quilt Times) Christmas Quilt-along in 2010, you get an extra entry.

As I’ll be using a random number generator to select winners, and each comment has a number, please enter a separate comment for each entry you qualify for.  Thank you!

Prizes will be awarded to a blend of those that enter the show vs viewers vs PR helpers, etc. all randomly select at the end of the show. Drawing for prizes will be completed late on the 22nd or early on the 23rd and announced via a post on this blog, no later than the 23rd.  An email will also be sent to each of the winners, where they will have 4 days to respond via email to claim their prize, otherwise another winner will be selected.  IF you have a preference for a particular prize, you may want to include the # of the prize (or your favorite 3 prizes) in your comment(s).  I can’t guarantee, but I’ll try to do the best I can to match prizes to winners’ interest.

No reply bloggers/no reply comments will not be accepted, unless they contain an email address for how to be contacted.
