#EQ25 – Highlights of an EQ7 Designer, Wendy Sheppard

I’m dedicating this post to the Electric Quilt Company, who is having an amazing year long 25th Anniversary Celebration with yummy prizes every month, plus loads of fun.  And, I’m thrilled to have several blogging friends joining me today, to help celebrate.  Many of us, will be sharing a EQ themed blog post on the 10th of every month this year, where you’ll find tips, tutorials, inspirational projects, as well as hopefully some fun quilty insights, as well as learn about how to win amazing prizes.

EQ 25 Celebration EQ logos

Today, I’m wanting to recognize the Electric Quilt Company for the fact that we now have such good access to quilt designers who have created their designs using EQ software.  increase awareness about how EQ software has helped so many quilters become professional designers.

EQ 25 Celebration EQ quotes

The majority of quilt designers use EQ software to design their projects for sale, for publication in various quilting magazines, as well as for providing free patterns.  As such, I’m going to showcase a prolific quilt designer who has accomplished publishing hundreds, if not thousands of designs, using EQ software and also chat about the differences between designing a quilt within EQ software vs software options for pattern writing.

Wendy Sheppard, whom you may know through her blog Ivory Spring, is a brilliant quilter, designer, teacher, author, and Master free-motion quilter.  She has probably published more designs in various quilting magazines, as well as created free patterns for various Fabric Manufacturers, than any designer I know. And she uses EQ7 to design!

When I spoke with Wendy about software she uses to design vs write her patterns, she shared that she uses EQ7 software for designing, but uses regular word processing software for pattern writing.

Note:From my observations, pattern writing styles vary from designer to designer, as well as their preference for which software package they wish to use for pattern writing. New designers that want to publish their designs may want to think about:

Designing:  EQ7 is the most popular tool for designing

Illustrations:  While EQ software does provide the ability to incorporate templates, blocks, etc., many designers prefer to also include other illustrations.  While some sketch on paper, most will use software designed to help create such drawings (e.g. Corel Draw, Inkscape, photoshop, PowerPoint, etc), or hire an illustrator/graphic artist.

Instruction writing/layout:  Many use regular word processing software (e.g. MSWord, etc), whereas some use more sophisticated software packages (e.g. MS Publisher, PowerPoint, Illustrator, Inkscape).

Summary:  There really isn’t a write or wrong choice when selecting a tool.  For many, it may start with what software you already have and/or are familiar with.  Others, the choice may come down to how much you are willing to spend, as well as how comfortable you are with learning new software packages.  My recommendation is to start playing with what you already have and may be familiar with and then make the decision to try more sophisticated and expensive software, when you feel you have pushed the limits of what the current software package can do.  But I hope others will share their perspective on this topic, by adding a comment on this post.  I’ll also be sharing more on this subject throughout the monthly EQ 25th Celebration this year.

Yes, each month several blogging friends are releasing a post on the 10th of each month to help celebrate the EQ 25th Anniversary.  Along the way, you’ll find tips, tutorials, inspirational project and various EQ themed insights.  Here are some bloggers that I hope you’ll click thru to visit today:

Don’t miss fun opportunities – Two Amazing Blog Hops!

I want to heighten awareness of two blog hops that are packed with #CreativeGoodness and fun.  Last week Marian Pena of Seams to be Sew hosted the EQ7 Seasons Row-Along.

Darlene's EQ Season RAL - Winter

While I shared my Winter Delights ROW pattern and a tutorial last week, today  I’m sharing a new free “bonus” pattern, a tutorial today, more insights about this blog hop, as well as hosting another giveaway.

But I also want to encourage you to visit all the blogs that are participating in the big reveal, aka Show N Tell Day, of this EQ Seasonal ROW-Along.  They’ll be sharing their seasonal quilts and you will find more tutorials, tips and giveaways this week at:

Don’t forget that there is a Facebook group is called “EQ Seasons ROW-Along” and is packed with inspiration.

DID I MENTION A FREE ROW PATTERN BEING GIVEN AWAY HERE?

My ROW quilt design is called Winter Frolic.  (above) My favorite ROWIt is designed for a ROW of eight blocks, finish 7 1/2″ x 10″, for an overall row of 10″x60″.  Each block is designed for raw edge applique’, or machine embroidery (I recommend designs by Marjorie Busby).

Winter Frolic ROW Pattern hoffman handpaints

(above) My favorite ROW was created using Hoffman fabrics, found in the new EQ Stash (2015 03).  EQ also has a 20% off sale on this Stash Collection, and several other products, this week.

sleigh with reindeers

(above) It is easy to add a border to see how this row might look as a table runner.  I used a simple border, but you can certainly create an endless number of border formats using EQ7 to audition designs, as well as fabrics in EQ7.

I had a blast using EQ7 to create these whimsical blocks. The snowflake block can easily be made using the AccuQuilt Sleigh & Snowflake die #55322, or you can traditionally cut it using the template provided in my pattern.  But die cuts will get you accurate shapes (a must for machine embroidery), faster and easier).

You can download a free PDF pattern for my Winter Frolic ROW Along quilt.  This pattern will be free, thru October 31st. Afterwards, it will be available for a nominal fee, where funds will be used to help with postage expenses for various prizes I ship directly to WW winners.

DID I MENTION A TUTORIAL ?

While I’m still learning how to record video tutorials, I created this tutorial to share how easy it is to use EQ7 to create designs for AccuQuilt applique dies.

If you have problems viewing this embedded video, here is a link where you can watch it directly in Youtube: https://youtu.be/TWg_5K9zaE4

I’m still learning how to create video tutorials.  While I have more tutorial topics planned for future video tutorials, if there is something you want to learn to do in EQ7, please let me know and I’ll see if I can cover it in a future tutorial.  I love all things EQ and while not an expert, I’m happy to try to help.

eq7 Seasonal QRAL Winter with AccuQuilt Sleigh and Reindeer

(note) the above version was created without taking time to use the measuring tape in EQ to plan out the size for the AccuQuilt pre-cuts on the respective blocks.  When using EQ7 to plan your projects for Accuquilt applique shapes, definitely take time to use the tape measure tool to verify your scale vs your block size.

DID I MENTION A GIVEAWAY ?

Every week, there have been some amazing giveaways that Marian organized with very generous sponsors.  Be sure to visit her blog post this week and enter  those giveaways, as appropriate.

Last week, thanks to Marian and some generous sponsors, I hosted a couple giveaways.  While those winners have been notified and the post last week has been updated, I wanted to take this opportunity to recognize the respective winners from last week (for giveaways on my blog):

Sulky 6 pack of 30 wt threads – winner:  Joyce C

$25 Gift Certificate to the Fat Quarter Shop – winner: Kathie L

Northcott Fabrics bundle of yardage – winner Elsie W

This week, I’m offering a giveaway of precuts to make my Winter Frolic design.  To clarify, this precut kit contains seven reindeer and a sleigh, all cut with the AccuQuilt Sleigh and Snowflake die.  You can use these applique shapes to create a ROW quilt, table runner, or create your own design.  I will send these precuts to one lucky winner, any where in the world.  Simply fill out the one option in the rafflecopter form below.  I will use Rafflecopter to randomly select a winner on October 12th and send an email to the respective winner. They will have 72 hours to claim their prize.

EQ Seasons Row-A-Long – Free Patterns, Giveaways, EQ Tutorials, Blog Hop, Fun and More

I’m thrilled  to be a stop in the blog hop for the EQ7 Seasons Row-A-Long, hosted by Marian Pena of  Seams To Be Sew.  If you are a visiting QuiltShopGal for the first time, Welcome.  And, if you are already a follower, I want to encourage you to check out all the participating blogs in this event as there are free Seasonal PDF patterns everyone can download and use to create ROW quilts, many tutorials, great inspiration, fun and amazing giveaways at each stop. To clarify, I have a free ROW pattern, a tutorial, as well as some giveaways for you today as well as links for the participating bloggers in this event. photo EQ Seasons RAL Button_zpsyolsgram.png

Are you thinking “What is a Row-Along?”

I’d like to stress, this is NOT the Row By Row Experience Shop Hop. I think of a Row quilt as unique designs for a row of blocks, or a row of a quilt, where the overall ROW quilt has a theme and you can combine various row designs to create your own unique quilt.  For this Row-Along, it is a fun blog hop where every participating blogger provides a unique design for a row quilt, with a Seasonal theme.    These designs were created using EQ software and many designers are also sharing their design file.

For this EQ Seasons ROW-Along, Marian has line up bloggers that provide a free pattern every Tuesday, with the theme:

  • Spring
  • Summer
  • Fall
  • Winter
  • filler row

And there are weekly giveaways, at each stop in this hop, as well as special giveaways to be awarded at the end of this event.

And, for those on Facebook, there is also a public group you can join to chat and share with others participating in this event, as well as sharing what everyone creates with these free patterns.  The Facebook group is called “EQ Seasons ROW-Along” and is packed with inspiration.

DID I MENTION A FREE ROW PATTERN BEING GIVEN AWAY HERE?

My ROW quilt design is called Winter Delight.  It is designed for a ROW of six blocks, finish 8″, for an overall row of 8″x48″.  Each block is designed for raw edge applique’.

Darlene's EQ Season RAL - Winter

For me, Winter is a Season of Beauty and whimsical fun.

seasons of beauty

I had a blast using EQ7 to create these whimsical blocks. The snowflake block can easily be made using the AccuQuilt Holiday Medley die #55043, or you can traditionally cut it using the template provided in my pattern.

You can download a free PDF pattern for my Winter Delights ROW Along quilt.  This pattern will be free, thru October 31st. Afterwards, it will be available for a nominal fee, where funds will be used to help with postage expenses for various prizes I ship directly to WW winners.   CLICK HERE to download.

For those that have electronic cutters (e.g. Silhouette Cameo, Sizzix Eclipse, Brother Scan N Cut, etc), you can download my SVG files for free prior to October 31st.  Afterwards, the SVG files will be available for a nominal fee, where funds will be used to help with postage expenses for various prizes I ship directly to WW winners.  If you are not familiar with how to use SVG files, please follow me on Youtube, as I will be releasing a tutorial soon, to show you how.

If you are an EQ user and would like EQ block designs for my Winter Delight design, as well as other designs shared in this Row-Along, the EQ team has kindly compiled a BLK file of all the designs shared in this event.  Here is a link to a tutorial and a download BLK for most of the design shared during this event, but the download BLK file will only be available thru October 31 st as many of the designers will be selling their ROW-Along patterns as of November lst.

DID I MENTION A TUTORIAL ?

There are some wonderful tutorials being shared during this ROW Along.  I decided to give a very quick and simple tutorial showing how easy it is to take an applique design and turn it into a machine embroidery design using EQStitch.  The EQStitch plug-in is a very economical and simple to use digitizing program that works with EQ7 software.  It is a great entry level digitizing program that is quite fun to use.  Perfect to make quilt labels and easy embroidery designs, which include fills and/or applique.

cache_240_240_1__100_-1_EQStitchDVD_flat_sm

I also used this as a personal learning opportunity, where I have created my very first video tutorial:

If you have problems viewing this embedded video, here is a link to watch it directly in Youtube: https://youtu.be/TJUsP4gsUDE

It is s-o easy to digitize a design in EQStitch.  Maybe you’ll want to digitize your own designs, block designs that come with EQ, or even create your own unique quilt label?  How about a unique quilt label for your EQ Seasons Row Along quilt?

Hoffman is always introducing beautiful new fabrics that are perfect for quilting, mixed-media artists, as well as sewing and embroidery enthusiasts.  The newest line by Jamie Fingal, is a whimsical and colorful line called Heart and Soul Sisters.

2014 Highlights on Gail Pan Designs and a Giveaway

badge for books with #CreativeGoodness copyGail Pan (Gail Pan Designs) is a talented quilter, designer, teacher and author who lives in the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia (at the foot of the beautiful Dandenong Ranges).  I’m excited today to share insights with you on one of Gail’s books released in 2014 “Simply Christmas 2014”, but first I want to mention some other very exciting things that Gail has done this year:

Gail Pan Designs logo

Gail created a new BOM program called “‘A Merry Christmas BOM”, which is a six month BOM program for retail stores.  You can find a list of shops that have hosted this BOM program on Gail’s blog but also feel free to share her flyer for this BOM with your favorite quilt shop, to let them know you’d like them to host such a BOM program.

Gail published her first book with Martingale, Patchwork Loves Embroidery: Hand Stitches, Pretty Projects

She designed a sweet line of fabric  for Red Rooster Fabrics called “Baskets in Bloom“, and designed a free downloadable pattern for this collection.  This fabric line was released in September 2014.

Gail Pan will also be at Quilt Market/Houston.  For those attending, be sure to pop by Gail’s booth #2117 to see all of her new books and patterns and meet her in person.

Lastly, her fun book called “Simply Christmas 2014” was released earlier this year.  It has 8 beautiful projects to make for your home or as a gift!

Projects  all come with excellent instructions and visuals.  The designs include several small wall hangings, a cushion, a table doily, pincushion, and table mat.  Of course the stitchery designs that are provided could also be used to make an endless possibilities of projects, including pillows or full size quilts.

You should be able to find this book in your favorite quilt store, but if not don’t forget to let them know you’d like them to carry it.  They can place wholesale orders for this book directly thru Gail Pan Designs.

And, don’t forget you can find Gail Pan Designs at:

Did I mention a Giveaway?

Gail Pan has kindle sent a couple of copies of this book to sponsor a giveaway for followers of this blog.  SewCalGal will gladly ship to lucky winners anywhere in the world.  Winners will be randomly selected using the rafflecopter form below and announced here on Sunday, October 26th.  An email will also be sent to the lucky winners to notify them and they’ll have 3 days to claim their prize, before another name is randomly selected.

For those participating in any of the monthly Make It A Handmade Christmas Challenge, you can also claim an extra entry for EACH month that you have participated this year.  Don’t forget a new linky part for this challenge will be released tomorrow and is open for entries between the 15th and 25th of the month.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Update:  Usually Rafflecopter widget will show the winners, but I haven’t figured out why this time it isn’t.  But I did use the rafflecopter random number tool to pick two lucky winners and I have sent them an email to notify them:
Julie Hall F.
Pauline P.

I hope you are having fun making handmade items to decorate your home for the holidays and/or to use as gifts.  We have less than ten weeks till Christmas, which is still plenty of time to make handmade gifts, although those that started earlier this year are way ahead at being ready.

Girly Fun For Quilters And Free Pattern from It’s Sew Emma (and the Fat Quarter Shop)

Are you a quilter that enjoys pampering?  You may also enjoy girlfriend time too!  From my research, most quilters enjoy quilting time with friends, as well as spending time with quilting friends in other ways too.   But there are a variety of ways we can enjoy our friendships.  It might be that we go out to lunch, a movie, or maybe go together for some pampering and have a manicure and/or pedicure?  Yes, pampering time with girlfriends can be great fun.  And a girlfriend can also be a Mother, Daughter, Aunt, Niece, Cousin.  Some time we girls just need to spend time together to help keep our inner balance and sanity in the world!

Do you like brights or neutrals for your nail polish?

Silly question, but I’m quite curious if you like similar colors for your quilts which you might like in nail polish?  To clarify, do quilters that like to work with bright colored fabrics also prefer bright nail polish or do they prefer neutral nail polish?  Hmm.  Another market research opportunity for SewCalGal????

Do you ever go out with girlfriends for some pampering time?

Do you enjoy getting your nails done, or have a girlfriend who does?  Do you enjoy the chuckles when a little girl gets such pampering time?  Well, I’m excited to let you know about a new quilt design that really creates great quilty fun for those that enjoy such pampering.  And, I think this design would also make quilts that would make excellent gifts.  Of course, it could also make for a great quilt guild challenge too!

This cute design is a delightful new pattern from It’s Sew Emma and it is a free pattern you can download.

While you can make this quilt using any fabric, The Fat Quarter Shop has very reasonably priced kits that use Moda Bella Solids to make this 14 1/2″ x 22 1/2″ quilt, as shown.  But be prepared, I’m confident you’ll want to make more than one.

While the pattern is well written and has easy to follow instructions, Kimberly Jolly and The Fat Quarter Shop has created an excellent YouTube video tutorial:

If you have problems watching this embedded video, or are on a MAC, here is the link to watch it directly in YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LYa84Youw4

And while Kimberly shows how to topstitch this quilt using crosshatch grids, for those that enjoy free-motion quilting I think this design and the Bella Solids fabric would make for a perfect quilt to show off your free-motion quilting.

Also, visit the Fat Quarter Shop Blog on August 4th to get more info on this design as well as links to a variety of quilt blogs that have made this design and will be sharing photos of their Nail Polish quilt that they’ve made using this free design.

And, SewCalGal hopes you and your girlfriends can find some pampering time together very soon!  It is good to treasure and nurture these special friendships with such girlfriends, especially quilting friends.

Happy Mother’s Day – Quilting With Eleanor, free patterns

In honor of Mothers Day today, I wanted to recognize a woman whom some might think of as the Mother of Quilting.  Eleanor Burns certainly has taught many to quilt and is loved by many quilters from all around the world.

Did you know Eleanor is coming out with a new line of fabric, from Benartex?  It is called Zoey Christine.  This line of fabric is actually named after one of Eleanor’s granddaughters.  So special, but as all mothers and grandmothers try to be fair, I think this means Eleanor is going to need to come out with more lines of fabric to ensure all her grandkids are recognized.  Or maybe I’m thinking that as she always comes out with such sweet fabric.
Pre-orders for Zoey Christine can now be accepted at Quilt in a Day.

Eleanor and the Quilt in a Day team created a fun YouTube video, where she also shares some insights in honor of Mother’s Day.  Plus, she shows how to create a spectacular quilt using an AccuQuilt.  She makes a Jewel Box quilt that can be created with a 6″ or 9″ design.  I also enjoy all of the tips she shares for precision piecing and connecting blocks with perfect seams that press perfectly flat.

This video runs for 59 minutes, but you can start/stop/repeat anytime you want.  You’ll see Eleanor make three quilt designs, as well as see these designs made in a variety of fabrics and colors.  Plus, there are free patterns for these designs!

If you have problems viewing this embedded video, or are on a MAC, you can watch it directly in Youtube by clicking this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdXqrMYQsuE&list=TL9PoAsZViBGQjYLoFR6zoxXthinWxFOeV
