My Favorite Tutorials: Chicken Pin Cushion

I originally learned about these Chicken Pin Cushions from Cindy Needham, several years ago,  as a guild she belongs to was making and selling them as a guild fundraiser.  Of course, I bought a “flock”, as they were so cute and for a great cause.

I was delighted when I saw this tutorial by Jenny Doan, of the Missouri Quilt Company, and knew instantly that I wanted to share it with you, as one of My Favorite Tutorials.

Little Big Stuff: Pint-Sized Play Sets to Sew for Kids – A Book Review and Giveaway

b1300_c

I’m delighted to share insights with you today about a fun new sewing book that is perfect for sewing enthusiasts of all levels, and contains step by step instructions to make 24 projects that will appeal to kids – boys and girls alike.

The “Little Big Stuff: Pint-Sized Play Sets To Sew For Kids“, by Michelle Lee Jensen, published by Martingale, is a great new book that I think anyone with kids or grandkids will want to create projects from this book, as well as make items to give away.   I’m even thinking some of these projects would make popular auction items for school fundraisers!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Michelle Jensen grew up in the small rural town of Clover, Utah. She graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, not sewing, and she confesses that her class load might have been much different if she’d known what she reallywanted to be when she grew up! She eventually married her high-school sweetheart, Weston, who has always been a wonderful source of support and a great person to share life with. Michelle didn’t start her sewing career until after the birth of her first child. She now has two children, Cately and Alex, who inspired this book because Michelle enjoys making items to warm their sweet little hearts. In addition to working on kid-friendly creations, Michelle designs things for the home, including table runners, wall hangings, bed quilts, adult bags, and clothing of all sorts. But that’s still not enough sewing for her: she also quilts professionally with her long-arm quilting machine.

Sharing the attitude of many people who love what they do, Michelle doesn’t feel like she’s working when she’s sewing and designing, because she enjoys those activities so immensely. She admits to sometimes getting a bit stuck when developing new, more challenging “outside-of-the-box” patterns or techniques. In those frustrating moments, she knows she just needs to put in some extra effort. She believes that challenging sewing projects inevitably lead to great results–unique products that make you proud, or that make someone else happy, or both! The extra effort is always worth it. Don’t let a mistake or an imperfect project stop you. Keep sewing.

MY REVIEW:

Little Big Stuff is packed with 24 fun sewing projects to make things that are kid friendly, for both boys and girls.  All of the projects in this book have easy to follow instructions with great visuals.  And, they will definitely encourage imagination and fun play time.

This book also provides skill-building techniques for adding applique’, applying bias binding, inserting piping, as well as installing zippers.Plus there are oodles of excellent tips, making this book a great book for beginning sewing enthusiasts as well as those with years of experience.

With 24 delightful projects, this book is truly an amazing value. I also think this book could be a great book for a pre-teen, or teen, that wants to learn to sew.  Many projects would make great gifts to family and friends, as well as for your kids to enjoy.

#SummerCamp – Creative Projects, by Heidi Boyd

SummerCamp badge Welcome to another #SummerCamp where our creative activities today focus on the Heidi Boyd, an amazing crafter, designer, sewing enthusiast, and author.  I personally love all of her designs and I’m delighted to showcase some that make for #KidFriendly projects during our virtual summer camp.  But first, a little bit about Heidi Boyd:

download

Heidi has a fine art degree in painting and drawing.  She has created her first line of fabrics with Red Rooster Fabrics, Forest Fabrics which will introduced in September. This new line of fabric would certainly make beautiful quilts, clothing, household decorator items and more.  I also think it would make lovely fabric for teaching kids to sew, particularly a pillow!  Click here to see the 19 fabrics in this beautiful collection of whimsical fabrics, including a panel of forest animals.

And, Quilt Shops will have this pattern to make a quilt using these fabrics too!   I’ve also heard that OESD will soon be releasing a machine embroidery design collection that compliments this fabric line, but I’m sure it will also be delightful to stitch out independantly.  forestfrolic313

She has also written many books, with Fairy Tale Sewing being her most recent book.

Heidi has created many Whimsy Softie designs, as well as Whimsy Stitches Hoop designs that are all delightful.  Perfect for decorating your home, as well as a gift to bring a smile to others anytime of the year.

Cats_Cover_BaggedKit_1000px

Penguins_COVER_BaggedKit_1000px WhimsyStitchesChickadees_BaggedKit_Cover_1000px

The “Colt” Embroidered Whimsy and “So Deer” Whimsy Stitches are great projects to teach kids the art of being creative thru stitchery!   And the  Cats, Bunnies and Penguins are the easiest of the softie kits.

But as these projects contain pins and needles, they are advised for kids 13+ and older.  (Although I know parents that have taught kids 5+ and older the art of stitchery and they do absolutely beautiful work.  Use your parental judgement and do watch any child closely when working with sharp sewing tools).

And don’t overlook how perfect these kits would be as a stocking stuffer, or other gift!

Many quilt shops carry books and kits by Heidi Boyd, but if you don’t find them let your local quilt shop know you’d like them to make them available.

#SummerCamp – Electric Quilt / Quilt Design Software

SummerCamp badge Welcome to another #SummerCamp where our activities today focus on the Quilt Design Wizard Software, from the Electric Quilt Company.  This software is super easy to use, very economical and pretty darn versatile, making it a perfect tool for kids to be creative this summer, or anytime.  And, I’m excited today to showcase this software.

First, I want to confess that I honestly love all things EQ!  While Quilt Design Wizard (QDW) is an excellent entry level software program, perfect for kids of all levels to learn to quilt, I also love EQ7 and other EQ products.  But today, I’m focusing on sharing insights about QDS as #SummerCamp is all about kids and this software is perfect to help kids learn to be creative and design quilts!

The Electric Quilt Company created a  Youtube video that provides a good overview of this software:

QDW allows kids of all ages to learn about designing quilts.  And for kids, this can be a great way to draw them in to making quilts.  And, of course it can be fun to color the blocks and quilts within the software, but you can also use this software to print out coloring pages!eq design wizard 2

Here are some insights from the EQ Team on QDW:

QDR is a software for beginning quilters and beginning computer users. It is an inexpensive way for you to try quilt designing on your computer for the first time. If you only need simple pieced blocks, straight/horizontal layouts, onpoint layouts, and want to play with color, then Quilt Design Wizard may be for you.

Start by selecting a layout style, mattress size, and block size. Then add borders. Quilt Design Wizard™ guides you stepbystep using an easy pointandclick method. Select from 200 quilt blocks colored with beautiful fabric and ready to set into your layout. Blocks are colorcoordinated in color families to help you choose blocks that work well together. You’ll be an instant designer with the Wizard’s help.

Print Patterns and Yardage.  Color the borders and you’re ready to print! Quilt Design Wizard™ prints fabric yardage estimates, rotary cutting charts, and sewing instructions for each block. If you prefer templates or foundation piecing patterns, Quilt Design Wizard™ prints those too!

Do you see the possibilities of a kid you know designing quilts in the future?  QDW could be a great tool to enable them to create!EQ Design Wizard
