Landauer Publishing has recently released Stitching Pathways: Successful Quilting on Your Home Machine, by Wendy Sheppard.

There’s nothing more fulfilling than saying, “I made this from start to finish.” Expert designer, author, and blogger Wendy Sheppard wants quilters of all skill levels to be able to make this statement through her new book “Stitching Pathways: Successful Quilting on Your Home Machine”.

Her beautiful visual guide will inspire quilters to get creative on their home machines and will inspire them to make gorgeous stitches — from feather plumes to swirly flowers and everything in between.  Wendy’s advice and proven methods will guid quilters through each step to build skill and confidence.  From straight line quilting to beautiful free-motion techniques, the book is packed with Wendy’s secrets for not only generating unique stitches, but also for caring for home sewing machines.  She does not skip a beat when it comes to covering both large and small projects alike.

You’ll find the following in Stitching Pathways: Successful Quilting on Your Home Machine.

  • Step-by-step stitch guides for over 25 quilting designs, which will increase confidence at each turn for basic to advance free-motion techniques.
  • Detailed diagrams and photographs to teach each design.
  • Wendy’s secrets to using and caring for your home sewing machine for quilting projects both large and small.
  • Quilt sampler projects included for perfecting new skils, each one with careful how-to-end and diagrams to guide the quilter each step of the way.
  • A unique approach to teaching machine quilting diagrams include directional arrows and rests for breathing and regrouping — essential for manuevering the quilt sandwich.

About Wendy Sheppard:

Wendy’s original designs have been featured in numerous publications, including The Quilter, Quilt Trend, American Patchwork & Quilting, Fons and Porter’s Love of Quilting, and many others.  She is the author of Recreating Antique Quilts and Creative New Quilts from precuts or stash.  She also designs patterns for Benartex, RJR Fabrics, Quilting Treasures, and Island Batiks and threads for Aurifil.  In addition to her design work, Wendy shares her free-hand and machine quilting deigns and tips on her website  Wendy group up in Southeast Asia and has a degree in Chemical Engineering.  She currently lives in Dumfries, VA.

I love the entire “two cents”  approach to sharing tips that Wendy takes with this book, throughout this book.   This book kicks off with keys to free-motion quilting success, Wendy’s favorite tools and threads, and plenty of helpful Thread Talk/My Two Cents tips, which alone are well worth the price of this book.

But wait, there is more – The chapter on Stitch Variations with 20+ quilting designs all have easy to follow instructions and great visuals, that will help you stitch these designs on your projects.  Wendy also shares insights on design principles for combining quilting motifs that I’m confident will help quilters of all levels learn and/or improve their freemotion quilting skills and make quilts with stunning FMQ.

Wendy also shares ideas for how you can use the insights shared in this book to apply to quilting panel quilts, a stitch sampler quilt, as well as a fun Modern Star Sampler quilt.  I’ll confess I absolutely fell in love with her “Squares and Rectangles”  where she walks you thru how to use designs and tips shared in this book, to create an stunning Bird Applique’ wallhanging quilt that is 27″ x 27″, which is a great design that can show off your freemotion quilting skills that you can learn from this book!  But all of the project designs in this book are stunning and perfect designs to use for stitching out free-motion quilting motifs taught in this book, which will help you build skills to easily apply these designs on your own projects.

I hope you get a chance to check out this new book at your favorite quilt shop.  Of course, if you don’t see it let them know you’re interested. It is such a new book they might night be aware of it.  Don’t forget you can also check it out, as well as buy it online at Landauer Publishing, as well as Amazon.    Landauer also has a 30% off sale, thru December 22nd, on all downloadable ebooks, se use coupon code EOOK30 at checkout.

Fast-Fold Hexies from Pre-cuts & Stash

Want to learn a super fun and fast way to make quilts with hexies?  How about making some innovative hexie designs?  Today, I’m going to share insights about a new book that was recently published by Landauer Publishing that is packed with #CreativeGoodness.

badge for books with #CreativeGoodness copy

Fast-Fold Hexies, by Mary M Hogan, was officially released at Spring Quilt Market!   Mary shares an innovated technique in this book, as well as some fun projects.

A new way to make hexies!

Quilt makers will be in awe of Mary M. Hogan’s newest innovation – fast-fold hexies! Just when you thought that there can’t be anything new beneath the hexagon quiltmaking sun, along comes a new and clever technique to make what quilters love easier and faster!

Hexagon quilts are certainly on-trend today, and have been around since the 1880s.   Quilters love their versatility because they are so adaptable to both modern and traditional designs.  Yet hexagon quilts can be challenging to piece, and so readers will rejoice at a new technique that streamlines the process.

Fast-Fold Hexies from Pre-cuts & Stash is a slender book jam-packed with how-to wisdom.  It takes readers through the step-by-step process to create each unit from a folded circle of fabric, inserting a hexagon-shaped piece of batting, and then adding another, smaller hexie on top to hide raw edges.  Quilters can sew by machine, or by hand when out and about.  The technique creates one complete hexie unit, and when you sew the units together, you get a two-sided quilt with no separate batting, backing or binding!

Readers will find the following in Fast-Fold Hexies from Pre-cuts & Stash:

  • 4 projects:  from a trivet to a lap quilt
  • Easy how-to and step-by-step: clear photography makes the hexie units’ construction a snap
  • Includes templates for fabric circles and hexagon-shaped batting
  • On-line links to coloring diagrams and additional projects!
  • 16 pages, only $12.95

Fast-Fold Hexies is a very innovative book with a great technique that is perfect for quilters of all levels, as well as easy to follow instructions on 4 creative projects.  When you consider the price of one stand alone pattern, the retail price on this book is an amazing value.

I hope you can check out this new book at your favorite quilt shop.  But, if you don’t see it, do let them know about it as it is such a new book they may not be aware of it.  Of course, you can also check this book at at Landauer Publishing , where you can also find a “look inside” this book. It is also available thru Amazon.

Block Genius

Today, I’m happy to share insights on an excellent new book, that I believe can help you create endless possibilities of quilted items with #CreativeGoodness.

badge for books with #CreativeGoodness copy

Landauer Publishing has recently released “Block Genius” and I think the name of this book truly captures what is inside.

Block Genius: 201 Pieced Quilt Blocks With No Math Charts, by Sue Voegtlin

A block library to inspire and instruct quilters of all levels.

About the Book:

In one volume, quilters will find over 200 classic blocks that they can use to one their sewing skills, in block exchanges, or to create wonderful block sampler quilts.  In this impressive collection, the author organizes the blocks in groups of 2 x 2, 3 x 3, 4 x 4, and 6 x 6 grids with instructions and math provided for 6-, 9- and 12-inch blocks.  This book is a block library that will be quilt shops and quilters’ go-to source for reference, inspiration and instruction.

mosaic-13With the exception of a few that were designed by the author, the block designs are all nearly 100 years old.  Some designs are still sewn to this day.  Others deserve new recognition and use by today’s quiltrs.

  • A browser’s delight:  the photography provides color and fabric-choice inspiration to quilters, and each block’s evocative name recalls quilting’s rich history.
  • Clear instructions and expert advice:  exploded diagrams of each block make construction a snap without special rulers.  Tips on fabric selection, color choice, cutting, pressing, and sewing.
  • No math:  The author provides accurate dimensions for each cut so that quilters can easily size their blocks for 6- 9- or 12-inches.
  • Includes instructions on constructing half-square and quarter-square triangles, flying geese, square-in-a-squares and parallel blocks.
  • Contains No Match Charts for resizing blocks.
  • Four classic to contemporary setting suggestions

About the author:

Sue Voegtlin has been Laundauer Publishing’s photographer since 2008 and has designed several quilts for our books.  She is an avid outdoorswoman and loves outdoor photography.  She is also a wonderful sewer, who began with garments, but graduated to the world of quilting when she came to Landauer, using our books to guide her.

About the publisher:

Landauer Publishing is an independently-owned, award-winning publisher managed by people passionate about books and about bringing high-quality inspirational and creative, techniques and how-to publications to life.  We are all about excellence in content, photography, design, and service to all our customers and to our authors.

This is an amazing new quilting book, truly perfect for quilters of all levels.  With 201 pieced block designs, each in three different sizes (6″, 9″ and 12″), it is an exceptional reference tool and one that can also help you easily create your own unique quilt designs.

The optional setting designs are all lovely, but I was particularly drawn to the Asymmetrical Setting, which I think enables creating stunning designs with a Modern Quilt style.  Possibilities are endless.

You’ll also find great visuals and instructions for cutting and assembly, plus plenty of “Good to Know” tips and techniques.  I hope you get a chance to check this book out at your favorite quilt shop.

maple-leaf-2 Don’t forget that if you don’t see it, you may want to let them know about it.  It is such a new book they may simply not be aware of it yet.  Of course, you can also check it out online at Landauer Publishing, or Amazon.

Easy-Sew Quilts For Urban Living

Today, I’m delighted to share insights on a fun new book, that I believe is packed with #CreativeGoodness.  I do want to disclose that I was given a copy of this book, in exchange for my honest review, as well as the ability to use it as a Giveaway or Prize, for an event hosted by QuiltShopGal.

.badge for books with #CreativeGoodness copy

Easy-Sew Quilts for Urban Living: 9 Fresh, Fun Designs, by Joanie Holton & Melaniee Greseth for TailorMade by Design, published by Landauer Publishing is a refreshing new book, with designs that have a modern flare, that would help you make stunning quilts for your home, or for gifts.

The dynamic duo of TailorMade by Design have created 9 new, contemporary bed quilts to attract the millennial and fabric-addict alike.  The stylish quilts in Easy-Sew Quilts for Urban Living utilize fresh, modern fabric to create breath-taking bed quilts.  This new pattern book places an emphasis on fabric to find inspiration for piecing and quilting.

Each quilt pattern includes piecing and applique’ instructions, as well as alternate color options.  Bold colors and prints attract a new audience to the quilting arena-the advanced beginner looking for an inspiring quilt pattern.  The larger fabric pieces and geometric designs make these patterns easy to cut, stitch and quilt!

Joanie Holton of Farmington, MN and Melanie Greseth of Peoria, IL inherited their love of sewing from their mother.  Their company, TailorMade by Design, focuses on creating designs and projects to highlight their textile clients’ newest fabric collections and offer quilt shops and consumeers patterns that inspire and challenge.  Many of their quilt and project designs have been featured in the top quilt and sewing magazines.

The nine patterns in this book all come with easy to follow instructions to make bed-size projects.  But I think a confident quilter could also easily adapt these designs to make table runners, that would also look spectacular (or wallhangings, pillows, etc).

The designs work well in a variety of prints and solids, for any color palette combination. And, they have negative space that would also work well to show off your free-motion quilting skills, or use your walking foot for straight line echo quilting.

I hope you will like this book and have a chance to check it out in your local quiltshop, or from Landauer Publishing’s online store, or thru Amazon (using my Affiliate Link)..

Note:  This book was given away as a prize in the 2015 Free-Motion Quilting Challenge, where Landauer was recognized as a sponsor.

Happy New Year – Goals and Plans for QuiltShopGal in 2016

happy new year clip art

There is something special about a New Year, as refreshing and fun as a clean chalkboard for you to sketch out your dreams.  You may have the same goal, the same dream, that you carry into the new year, or you may start with completely different goals.  My personal focus is to look forward, although I do spend time looking back at the year prior, as I establish my new goals.

Today I want to share insights with you on my goals and plans for 2016.  Of course, I hope they will inspire you to follow QuiltShopGal, but I also reserve the right to change my plans throughout the year.  A little more or less of this and that, if you catch what I mean.

MY WORD for 2016 continues to be #CreativeGoodness.  While Quilting, Sewing and Embroidery are my favorite forms of creativity, I do want to continue to explore and encourage and admire many forms of creativity.

RESEARCH AND REPORTING is a core thread of QuiltShopGal and will continue to be so in 2016.  I am currently researching several topics, that have taken me months to thoroughly research, but I hope to be sharing these soon.  I also plan on getting back on track with my “Designer Showcase Series“.

CHARITY FUNDRAISERS AND PAY-IT-FORWARD KINDESS  – I plan to host a couple of charity fundraisers, as well as help with acts of Pay-It-Forward Kindness.  The first Charity Fundraiser will be hosted in March, to benefit Cystic Fibrosis programs around the world, with an emphasis on an excellent program in Australia.  Sneek Peaks on this fundraiser will be shared in January.

  • Cystic Fibrosis

charity fundraiser #StitchAlong Justin's Magic Mandalas

  • Pets in Shelters/Homeless Animals – also need helping hands from quilting, sewing and embroidery enthusiasts WW.
  • Heaven Sent a new non-profit focused on providing quiltlets to wrap babies that have passed away cover caskets for such babies.

Stitch A Long Template Leah Day

ENGLISH PAPER PIECING STITCH A LONG – summer 2016 – While I have a couple of different EPP designs I’ll be showcasing, this event will be open for sharing any EPP project you are making, or have made, in 2016.  Simply needs to be an EPP project.

UFO / JUST FINISH IT CHALLENGES – I’m shooting to host 2-3 UFO Challenges in 2016.  Some will be focused on FMQ and some focused on any project you wish to share, they just need to be finished in 2016.

  • Lunch Box Quilt Designs – Recipe Towel Collections
  • Kaleidoscope Kreator – Feathers Embroidery Collection
  • Sarah Vedeler – GO! BeDazzled or Stars Collections.  While I have a couple of projects I’ll be using these collections for, this #StitchAlong (like other Stitch A Longs) are open for any sharing that you create using these collections.   What do you think about these motifs for a table runner, pillow or quilt?

SKILL BUILDING CHALLENGES AND STITCH A LONGS – in addition to Free-Motion Quilting, I plan to host a few events that will help us build our skills for:

  • Precision Piecing Stitch-A-Longs & Challenges
  • Electric Quilt Skill Builders & Challenges – we’ll also be celebrating EQ’s 25th Anniversary this year, during these events.

AFFILIATE PROGRAMS AND POSTAGE ANGELS – To better manage my personal quilting budget, which historically has been negatively impacted by shipping prizes and giveaways, in 2016 I plan to:

  • Continue utilizing Affiliate programs, for businesses and products that I can honestly recommend.  When you click thru any of my blogs to make a purchase, you pay the same as you would have if you went direct to that site, but I “may” receive a small fee back that I use to supplement postage costs.
  • Those that opt to pay-it-forward, by reimbursing me for postage, as well as those that make postage donations, will be recognized in future giveaways and announcement of prizes, where their funds are used to help with postage expenses.
  • As US postage cost has increased, International postage has skyrocketed.  The cost of shipping a book typically exceeds the price of the book, often 7-10 times the cost of what it would cost to shipping within the US.  While I could limit winners to be US only, this year I’m going to ask that International winners “donate” a flat rate of $20, as a Postage Angel, for any prize that they wish to claim.  To clarify, should postage of their prize exceed this rate, I will pay the difference and if the cost is less, the extra amount simply goes into the postage budget to pay-it-forward, with the winner being recognized as a Postage Angel.

Again, I wish you a very Happy and Healthy New Year. I also wish you time to enjoy and create.
