#Summer Camp – Creative Fun For Kids with Patrick Lose

SummerCamp badge

Summer Camp is all about creativity and having fun, for kids of all ages.  Today I want to share insights with you about some really cute patterns from Patrick Lose Studios, that are great for teaching kids to sew.

Patrick Lose has designs just packed with #CreativeGoodness that are fun to make and decorate your home with, or give as a gift.  He is an artist and illustrator and prolific designer.

patrick lose

Today, I want to share two designs that I think make for great #KidFriendlyProjects that would make for fun creative summer activities, as well as his beautiful fabric lines would be great for endless possibilities of projects.  At a minimum, consider teaching a kid to sew using Patrick’s fabric to make a pillow.

Patrick has  designed beautiful fabrics for Timeless Treasures, Robert Kaufman Fabrics, Moda Fabrics, but he currently designs fabrics only for RJR Fabrics.  He frequently works with brilliant fabric and cheerful designs with a whimsical nature.  Today I want to showcase a few of Patrick’s designs and some of his fabric, which I think would make for fun and creative projects for kids, or any adult that wants to work with a kid to encourage them to be creative.

This beautiful Tropical Table Topper is a fun and fast applique design that certainly welcomes in summertime:

00384201004231202498767

And these Patriotic Placemats, are perfect anytime of the year, but definitely would make for a beautifully decorated table to celebrate the 4th of July.

00384201206100724495066

Patrick has many fabric collections that are currently on the market.  Three that caught my attention for #kidfriendlyprojects are: Lily’s GardenBeggar’s Bounty, and Lovebirds.  You should be able to find his fabric in your favorite quilt shops, but if you do not kindly let them know you are interested. RJR Fabrics also has an online Fabric Finder tool to help you find what stores carry various lines of their beautiful fabrics.patrick lose with RJR Fabrics

No matter how you look at it, sewing a project using a design by Patrick Lose will certainly make for great summer fun.  But teaching a kid to sew is even more fun using his designs and/or Fabric.

I hope you are inspired to help teach a kid to sew this summer with a design and fabric by Patrick Lose.

Want to know how to join #SummerCamp?

Everyone is welcome to join #SummerCamp, but there have been a few changes due to lack of participation.  To clarify, we’d love to have you participate but we no longer have a linky party to join, nor will there be prizes awarded at the end of this event.  Participants are asked to share what they create on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram and use the Hashtag #SummerCamp.

Here is a list of links to previous posts for our virtual #SummerCamp

December Linky Party – Make It A Handmade Christmas Challenge

The goal of the Handmade Christmas Challenge has been to encourage #CreativeGoodness by making handmade throughout the year, to be able to decorate your home for the holidays, as well as give as gifts.

But, as many creative people are busy, it is easy to understand that some people may just now be working on making such handmade items, whereas others may have oodles of handmade items completed.  Either way, this is all about having fun and inspiring others with creative ideas for giving handmade and decorating your home with handmade.  And we hope those that don’t have time to make handmade will still have fun and find inspiration.

This is our last Linky Party for this challenge and everyone is invited to join the fun.  You can share everything you’ve made in 2014 that you plan to use to decorate your home, or give as Holiday gifts, including items that you may have recently made.

Christmas is now a few weeks away, but there is still plenty of time to make a handmade item and join this challenge,  where the Linky Party this month will be open through December 10th.  There are over 70 prizes that will be awarded to those that participate in this Linky Party, as well as those that participated in one or more Linky Parties this year for this challenge.  The more events you participated in the more chances you have to win prizes.  In randomly awarding winners, I’ll also be looking at all the entries to look for those that have shared a tutorial along the way, those that may have created the most unique handmade holiday item, possibly those that have made the most handmade items, or the largest.  Winners will be announced between December 16-25th and in keeping with the spirit of this challenge, there will be some surprises in how winners are selected, but most will be randomly selected based on simply entering the challenge and making handmade items that fit with our holiday theme in 2014.

SewCalGal wants to recognize and thank all the sponsors that have generously donated prizes for the Make It A Handmade Christmas Challenge.  Click here for a complete list of prizes that will be randomly awarded to participants of these monthly challenges, in December.

How do you enter?  Make handmade  gifts for the holidays or decorations for your home for the holidays, anytime in 2014 and enter in any of the monthly challenges for a chance to win prizes.   Bloggers and non-bloggers can participate and you can make your items anytime throughout the month, but you can only share what you make one time in one monthly challenge.  The exception is with this challenge, you are encouraged to also share a photo that shows ALL of the items you have handmade for the holidays in 2014 and hopefully you will provide a count in your blog post or flickr description that you link to in this linky party.    You may have made just 1 item, 10, 20, 100 or tbd items, but share a photo showing all, photos of what you’ve recently made, and how many handmade items you’ve made for the holidays in 2014.

Rules to enter this challenge:

While there are many sponsors and many wonderful prizes for those that enter in one or more of the monthly Linky Parties in the Handmade Christmas Challenge, that are open to quilters worldwide, as SewCalGal will be shipping this particular prize to the lucky winner and currently has limited funds for shipping prizes, the winner of this bundle will need to be a US resident.

1) Projects need to be made in 2014 (they do not need to be made during the 10 day window of a a given monthly linky party.  But they need to be something you made for a Christmas gift or to decorate your home for the holidays.  Please do not enter projects that you giveaway throughout the year, or previous holidays as that doesn’t bring you good quilting kharma!

2) You can enter one or more completed projects, but your linky needs to be in a current post (or non-bloggers can upload their photos and provide a link to a view able line tool like PhotoBucket, Flickr, etc.).   note:  Future challenges will require you to use only Flickr.  Click here to see a tutorial for using flickr.

3) Participants are asked to include comments in their post that share insights on the design(s) they use, any tips they wish to share, and if they made something with their own design they may wish to share a tutorial.  Your help to encourage others to make handmade gifts, throughout the year to give as gifts or to decorate their home, is appreciated.  And, of course, you can also inspire others by sharing your projects, providing tips and tutorials, as well as recognizing the source of the design for your project, should others be interested in making it too!

4) Bloggers are asked to include in their post information that that shows they have taken the “Pledge to make handmade Christmas Gifts in 2014” and are participating in this challenge.  It would be appreciated if you would encourage others to also participate, or at least come look at all of the entries each month, as hopefully we’ll inspire other quilters and increase awareness of designs, tips, tutorials to help make beautiful Christmas gifts and decorations.  Your blog post also needs to be dated during the period of this linky party (do not link to old posts).

This linky party will be open thru the 10th of  this month, to give participants plenty of time to enter this monthly challenge. If you are not familiar with how to use a linky click here for a tutorial.
For blogger participants that are interested in posting a badge, the badge code can be found on the main page for this event.  Thank you!

Let’s not forget the spirit of this challenge is to make handmade gifts for Holidays or decorations for the holiday season, throughout the year.  We also hope to help increase awareness of designs, free patterns, tutorials and other products that help to make such products. And, your help in inspiring others to make handmade for Christmas is appreciated.  PR Angels are also appreciated.

If you have questions for this Challenge, please read the FAQ.

In some cases an UFO that is finished in 2014 may count, when a good part of it is worked on in 2014.  But those that are simply putting in a single stitch this year to count it as an entry  for this challenge will not have good kharma.  Please strive to adhere to the intent of this challenge…..Make Handmade in 2014 for Christmas gifts and decorations for the 2014 Holiday season!

Winners will be announced between December 16th-25th!

Visit the main page for this event, by clicking here, to see a complete  list of prizes. While many prizes are open to quilters from around the world, some prizes will be shipped to US Only winners, where shipping costs are compliments of SewCalGal.  Non-US winners may pay for shipping costs, if they wish to receive such prizes.

Thank you to everyone that has participated in these monthly Linky Parties.  There have been many wonderful handmade items that have been shared that are inspirational gifts, as well as some great tutorials.  SewCalGal has also received a tutorial by a non-blogger who handmade some lovely jewelry and I hope to have that tutorial posted here, on my blog, this week.

November Linky Party – Make It A Handmade Christmas Challenge

Christmas is now less than six weeks away.  I’m sure we are all envious and yet inspired by  those that started making handmade items to decorate their home and/or give as gifts, earlier in the year.  But, there is still time to make handmade items for the holidays.  And two remaining opportunities to enter to win one or more of the 70+ prizes that have been donated by generous sponsors for this event.

SewCalGal wants to recognize and thank all the sponsors that have generously donated prizes for the Make It A Handmade Christmas Challenge.  Click here for a complete list of prizes that will be randomly awarded to participants of these monthly challenges, in December.

This is the November  “Linky Party” for participants in the Handmade Christmas Challenge where you can share what you have made for Christmas gifts or decorations this month.  And you have till the 25th of this month to enter!  We will also have a special linky party, early December, where you’ll get one more chance to enter to win prizes, by simply sharing what you have made throughout 2014 for Holiday Gifts or holiday decorations for your home. We’ll also have some special awards based on those that enter the December Linky Party (e.g. Who made the most handmade holiday items in 2014, Viewer’s Favorites, Who shared tutorials for their handmade items, etc. etc.).

How do you enter?  Quite simple.  You can make handmade  gifts for the holidays or decorations for your home for the holidays, anytime in 2014 and enter in any of the monthly challenges for a chance to win prizes.  Bloggers and non-bloggers can participate and you can make your items anytime throughout the month, but you can only share what you make one time in one monthly challenge (but you can show it again in the December Linky Party when you show all the things you handmade for the holidays).  You get an entry for every monthly challenge you enter as well as an entry for entering the December linky party to show EVERYTHING you’ve made as part of this year’s Make It A Handmade Christmas Challenge and the more events you enter the more chances you get to win more prizes!

Some participants have been sharing tutorials that help to showcase their entry, via their blogs.  I will also be releasing tutorials on my blog, compliments of some creative non-bloggers that wanted to share their techniques for making handmade gifts for the holiday season.  Either way, I’m a firm believer that when you adopt the pay-it-forward approach to helping others it also brings you good kharma to winning prizes.  And that doesn’t stop with providing tutorials, as those that are PR Angels and encourage others to make handmade for the holidays should also be blessed with good kharma for winning prizes.

Top Ten Ways Quilters Celebrate the 4th of July

The 4th of July is rich in celebration that has traditions many do every year from backyard BBQs, spending time with family and friends, the day spent at a beach or pool, picnics in a park, to watching fireworks.  Yet, I began to wonder how do Quilters celebrate this holiday?  Of course, when my inquiring mind questions something I start researching the internet and asking others.  Today, I want to share with you some insights that I found.  And, I hope you’ll let me know how you are celebrating the 4th of July too!

Jocelyn (Just A Little Southern Hospitality) created a beautiful Patriotic table setting.  Pop on over to her blog to see more photos and hear more about how she celebrates the 4th, as a quilter!

Wouldn’t these cute Patriotic Placemats, by Patrick Lose Studios, be cute on your table.  Maybe we can make some for Labor Day?

00384201206100724495066

And some quilters might take time to quilt on the 4th.  They might even make a quilt or quilt block for Quilts of Valor.  I’m actually working on some hand applique’ star blocks for QOV today!

Some quilters decorate their bed with a beautiful Patriotic quilt.

Some quilters go on a picnic in the park on the 4th.  But, don’t you think they should make a patriotic quilt for such a picnic on the 4th of July?

note: this post was updated to remove broken links from using images found on Pinterest.

I do hope you have a very Happy 4th of July.  We’ll be getting together with friends for a beach BBQ and watch the fireworks tonight.   Want to know how you can recognize me in the group as a quilter?  I’ll be the one that brings the Patriotic quilted table topper, Patriotic Bunting, and wearing an upcycled/embellished Patriotic shirt….plus, my Patriotic shoes!

So, time to share what you are doing to celebrate the 4th of July and will others be able to spot that you are a quilter?

Black Friday/Cyber Monday Holiday Shopping

Last year, about this time, I compiled a list of products that I thought would make great Christmas gifts.  This year, I decided to do some research on Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping for quilting, sewing and embroidery enthusiasts, as well as share insights on some products that I think would make great Christmas gifts.

I believe most everyone is aware that Black Friday (sometimes Green Friday) is a term used to refer to the point in the year where merchants typically feel they are now profitable and Cyber Monday is a day where online sales tend to be at their highest point of the year, at least in the US.  No matter what the definition is, this window tends to be the busiess shopping days of the year.  Unfortunately, I don’t have any Market Research to determine how this all applies to businesses focused on quilting, sewing or embroidery.  So, I set out to do some research on my own and much of this post shares insights with you about some Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales that you might be interested in.

Warning:  This is a long list, but I do think it is worthy of checking.  And, I’ve also included a list of my recommendations for Christmas gifts to quilting friends (or yourself).

Martingale & Company is going to be offering an amazing Black Friday deal to their email subscribers. So if you’re not signed up yet, go to their website and sign up now so you don’t miss out!”   You also get a coupon for 30% off your next purchase, when you sign up for their newsletter.

Designer Challenge Part 1 & 2

How good are you at recognizing designer patterns, styles, fabrics? And, if you are not very good, are you interested in building your skills in this area? I know I am.

To clarify, this is currently part one of a two part post. The title of this post and actual post will be updated when the first person to guess the designer of this quilt. You can submit an email to SewCalGal or add your comment at the bottom of this post.

First person to guess correctly will be recognized on http://quiltshopgal.com/p/designer-challenge.html

I will also update this post to reflect who was the first to accurately guess the designer, and share a bit more insight on the designer, as well. If no one can accurately guess the designer in 24 hours, I will update this post to reflect same, along with sharing insights on the designer. So, I hope you’ll check back.

note: If there is a discrepancy on designers, that may have similar styles, SewCalGal will be the ultimate judge to determine the winner. And, in most cases, the photo of the quilt shown in this post will also be posted on the designers site.

PART II

Who Guessed it:   Shelly Rodgers (aka Shelly The Pirate), was the first to correctly guess this Designer Challenge.

Who is this designer:  Patrick Lose

One of my personal objectives of blogging was to be able to broaden my insights. While I was familiar with Patrick Lose, long before I started blogging, thru my research for this blog I have become more familiar with Patrick Lose, and definitely fallen more in love with his whimsical and cheerful designs.

Patrick Lose was also received a nomination in the Golden Quilter Awards for Best Designer, which shows he is recognized and loved by many quilters!  He has also written many wonderful quilt books, including “A Patrick Lose Christmas“,  “Poster Quilts with Patrick Lose“, “Terrific Table Toppers” and many more published by CT Publishing.

Patrick also has designed a variety of fabrics, perfect for making cheerful quilts.

And Patrick has a great collection of beautiful patterns, including a large number of Christmas Designs (a few are shown here).

I certainly hope to see some quilts in the 2010 Christmas Quilt Show, using some of Patrick’s cute Christmas designs.
And, Patrick has a great club called “Party with Patrick!”.   Check with your local quilt store to see if they have the Party with Patrick Club.  If they don’t, simply let them know they can contact Patrick.  This club is a great way for everyone to have fun and make some projects that Patrick releases specifically for club members!
