Pets on Quilts Show 2012

Welcome to SewCalGal’s entry in the 2012 Pets on Quilts Show.

For my followers that may be visiting and are not familiar with the Pets on Quilts Show, I want to start off this post with sharing some “set the stage” information:

Jacque (Lily Pad Quilting) is hosting the 2012 Pets on Quilts Show.  The show starts today and goes thru August 10th.  The Pets on Quilts Show has been a fun event that allows us to show off our love of quilting, as well as our love of pets of all types. And, to also promote adoption of homeless pets!   As the show owner, Jacque has full rights to put what ever spin on this event that she wants, to make it her own.

Pets on Quilts

While SewCalGal has hosted the 2010 Pets on Quilts Show and the 2011 Pets on Quilts Show, I realized with the 2012 Free-Motion Quilting Challenge and other commitments, I could no longer continue hosting the Pets on Quilts Show.  This is a fun event, so I was delighted  when  Jacque volunteered to become the “owner” of this show and host it in the future.  She has been working hard to get some wonderful sponsors lined up and help increase awareness of this event.  I hope everyone will pop on over to her delightful blog and have fun viewing all the delightful entries in the show this year.
This is my first year to actually enter anything in the Pets on Quilts Show.  And, I’m not actually certain I qualify to enter, but I still wanted share a pet theme insights with you today.
To start off, I want to make a public service announcement for cats.  I also want to apologize to my four legged friends called “dogs”, “rabbits”, “lizards”, and other names that I I do not have a special announcement for.  But, I hope you forgive me and know that I’ll gladly provide public service announcements that may apply to you, if you help provide appropriate insights to give me a kickstart.

Ok, back to my PSA –  I hope every quilter with cats will take time to remind them how lucky they are to live in a loving home with a quilter. And, I’m sure you appreciate how much they help you with your quilting.   And, I hope everyone will consider adopting a homeless pet from their local shelter, when they have an opportunity to provide a loving home.  Of course, shelters are also always in need of donations, as well as pet beds, so you may want to periodically use your scraps and make a pet bed to donate to your local shelter.  After all, four legged ball of fur certainly sleeps better on a bed than concrete or a metal cage. And, if they have a good night sleep they’ll present themselves cheerfully and have a better chance for a good adoption the next day!

You may also want to tell cats, living in shelters or non-quilting homes about  “Career Counseling for Cats”
to help them learn about the “purrfect” job opportunities for Cats.  Of course, we quilters with cats know what those opportunities are.
Note:  The above image was created using MyMemories software, assisted with their easy to use “QuickPage” called Kitty and Tweet.  While my blog is copyright protected, if you would like to download and use a copy of the above image, you have  my permission to do so.  Enjoy.
But, please remember to ask for approval before using any other image, text, tutorial, etc. on my blog (thank you).

I want to confess, that sadly, SewCalGal is currently petless.  But, I’m always willing to give a four legged person a good body massage or hug. And, I love to pet sit.  I do feel fortunate that I have a neighbor kitty that loves to come visit when I’m gardening.  So, on a recent visit I asked this cute kitty to pose on a quilt I just made.  It was an interesting challenge for me, as I learned that a cat may want to walk on a quilt, or play under it, but when the camera comes out they really don’t want to pose.

I also want to confess that the inspiration for this quilt came from a post on Quilting is My Therapy, where Angela Walters shared insights on some free-motion quilting she did for a quilt for Robert Hoffman.  Her quilting was spectacular and the “banner quilt” was made using beautiful Dr. Seuss fabrics that Robert Hoffman will be introducing this Fall.  I definitely had fun making this quilt and want to make it again, using the Dr. Seuss fabrics, when it comes available.
I wasn’t certain I’d be able to share this quilt with you, but I did work with Angela Walters and Robert Hoffman Fabrics to obtain approval, given I was inspired to make this quilt based on sneak peak insights shared on Angela’s delightful blog (Quilting is my Therapy).  Thus, I want to thank Angela and Robert Hoffman Fabrics for all the beauty and inspiration that they provide to quilting and sewing enthusiasts!
Oh, and should you be interested in having fun creating with the MyMemories Software, I think you’ll like it.  Very easy to use and while it is commonly used for scrapbooking, it is also a great tool to create images for blogs, blog headers, greeting cards, and much, much more.  I use a variety of digital editing software packages, but truly do enjoy MyMemories software.  It is purrfect!
MyMemories software is so reasonably priced at $39.97. They have also offered readers of SewCalGal a $10 discount off the purchase of the My Memories Suite Scrapbook software and a $10 coupon for the My Memories store – $20 value! Just copy and paste the code STMMMS74482 and enter it during checkout to receive your discount!
Use Code STMMMS74482 at checkout!

Again, I hope your click on over and check out all the entries in the Pets on Quilts Show, hosted by Lilypad Quilting.   Entries are also accepted thru August 10th, so keep coming back to this show to see “all” of the entries.  And, I look forward to seeing you entry in this fun show too!

Flip Flap Bag, by Whistlepig Creek

Whistlepig Creek Productions (WCP) is one of my favorite design houses that has fun designs for purses, totes, quilts, wallhangings and more.  Their welcome greeting on their site reads “With our whimsical patterns, our goal is to make you giggle!”.

Sue Marsh

Sue Marsh, the very creative designer behind WCP, is also a fabric designer with RJR Fabrics.  Her current line is the very popular “Caterwauling Tales” fabric line.

I had fun making WCP’s Flip Flap Bag.

Instructions contain fabric requirements, good cutting visuals, sewing and assembly instructions. SewCalGal views this pattern to be an excellent pattern for intermediate and advanced sewing enthusiasts, or a highly confident beginner.  I did learn from the designer, Sue Marsh, that they are working on on-line step-by-step tutorials which I think will really help beginners with learning to make beautiful bags using designs by WCP.  Customers can also contact WCP’s Customer Service, should they have any questions and they will help walk you through any steps needed, as well as provide additional photos, as appropriate.

I certainly had fun making this cute Flip Flap Bag, using batiks from Hoffman California Fabrics.

I’m planning on ordering these “new” buttons from ButtonMad, as soon as they are available.  I want to embellish the flap of this bag with a “school of fish”.  The design of this bag could work well without any embellishment, some machine embroidery, buttons, lace, or where ever your imagination takes you.

Buttonmad button
ButtonMad, aka Incomparable buttons, has many wonderful buttons that make for excellent embellishment of purses, totes, jackets, quilts and more.  These purse just seemed to be perfect for a school of fish buttons from ButtonMad.

With, or without embellishment, this is a cute bag with oodles of pockets.  It works well with fat quarters, or pull 3 coordinating fabrics from your stash.  You’ll have this project finished in no time at all and want to make more!

I’d sure love to see some quilts entered in the 2012 Pets on Quilts Show using some of Whistlepig Creek patterns.  This “Cattitude” wallhanging is purrfect!  But Whistlepig Creek has many wonderful Pet theme designs, along with other wonderful whimsical designs too!

You should be able to find WCP designs at your local quilt shop, or you can order directly from WCP via their online store.

Winners of the Pets on Quilts Show

The 2011 Pets on Quilts Show is officially over, but you can still view all the entries at your liesure.
There were 109 entries this year (66 entries in the 2010 Pets on Quilts Show).  And, we had  5,000+ visitors to the show this year!

I want to recognize and thank all of the sponsors for this show and I hope you will also thank them and support them too, when you have the opportunity.  They’ve been very generous donating wonderful prizes.

Thank you to everyone that entered this show.  You are all truly winners and the show wouldn’t have happened without you entering!  We had a large variety of entries from dogs, cats, fish, birds, llama, EQ designs, and art quilts and everyone was delightful.  But, for added fun, like many shows, we have the Winners of the Viewer Choice Awards, which were based on nominations of viewers.  They are:

Other winners were randomly drawn based on a number of categories (e.g. PR Angels,  those that entered the show, those that came to the show to have fun and view the show, those that took time to view all the entries and leave a comment on the post of the entry, those that voted for Best of Show, Best of show winners, etc.).  And, as there were a few winners of last year’s show where a particular sponsor never did ship the prize, when those winners came back to participate in this show, they were automatically given a prize.    Once all the names were identified for the 26 prizes, I did my best to match winners up with the prizes that some of you expressed an interest in.

Congratulations to all of the lucky winners!  I’m sending out emails to all of them today, to let them know and confirm they want to claim their prize.  If they do not claim their prize within 3 days I will draw another winner.

Please remember that there are pets living in shelters that need good homes.  If you have room in your heart and home, I hope you’ll consider adopting one.  You may also want to consider making a quilted pet bed, or quilt, for an animal living in a shelter to have a cozy home.  But do check with your local shelter to see if they have any special bedding requirements before you do sew.

Update on Pets on Quilts Show

Today, Friday, is the last day to enter the Pets on Quilts Show.  You can enter till midnight PST.  Everyone (those that entered the show and all viewers) are invited to vote for their favorites this coming Saturday & Sunday.  Just be sure to read the rules and submit your nomination for your favorites, in a variety of categories, on the show page, by Sunday midnight PST.

I have also heard from some that view they are “petless” so I want to share insights with you on my current pet and clarify the intent of the rules, which is all about having fun.

{above} This is a picture of my Barcelona Cat on a quilt I made many years ago that is hand pieced and hand quilted, with center blocks using some fabric that has a cute cat looking into a fish bowl.  I made this quilt while traveling, for use on our boat.  It was also a surprise gift to my husband.

To my husband’s delight the back of this quilt has an applique silhouette of our boat. I think he always liked the back more than the front.

This quilt isn’t one of my best hand quilting projects, but was made as a quicky for a utilitarian quilt on our boat.  And, I must confess that I’m now having so much fun with machine quilting that I’m doubtful I’ll ever tackle a handquilting project again.  Well, maybe one or two more.

Ok, back to my Barcelona Cat.  Our prior pets are now in Pet Heaven. While we love all sorts of pets, this just doesn’t seem to be a good time in our lives for adopting a pet.  So, I’m always volunteering to babysit pets (for free).  When I was on a business trip in Barcelona and spotted a street vendor selling these cut cats, I had to have one to tease my DH about bringing home a stray cat from Barcelona.  Hey, I almost brought home a baby rabbit from a Chinese night market one trip.  Anyway, our Barcelona Cat is much loved and cuddled, but just not the same as a real pet.  So, I hope you understand that I live vicariously thru the Pets on Quilts Show and enjoy hearing stories and seeing photos of your Pets and your Quilts.

Realizing that there are many that do not have their own Pets, I want to emphasize that the Pets on Quilts show is all about having fun with a pet theme. Again, if you have a quilt that has a pet theme in design or print enter it.  If it has pet theme machine embroider enter it. If you want to borrow a neighbors pet and photograph it on your quilt enter it.  If you have a stuffed animal (aka my Barcelona cat) enter it.  If you have fish and can display your quilt next to your fish (or other pet) enter it.  There are a lot of pets that you can not easily situate on top of your quilt, so please understand that the rules are flexible and if you can get a photo of your quilt with your pet nearby, that too is fine. Just enter and share insights on your pet, past pet, stuffed pet, etc.  Just have fun.

And, of course, I love to hear stories about rescued animals and ways to promote adoption of pets living in shelters.  Be creative.  Enter.

Lastly, I thought I’d share a photo of the first pass of the 2012 Pets on Quilts Calendar.  These three copies will become prizes for this show, but I will be making changes in future revisions of this calendar.  And, each revision will also contain a different collection of photos of Pets on  Quilts.  If you would like to submit a photo of your Pet on your quilt please email me before September lst.  These calendars will be used to raise funds for the Humane Society.

And please remember to go vote for your favorite entries, starting Saturday, Aug 20th thru Sunday, August 21st.
I am hoping to be able to post all the winners of the Pets on Quilts Show on Monday, August 22nd. But I want to let you know I’m also traveling, so I may not be able to post insights on the winners until sometime Wed., Aug 24th.

Welcome to the 2011 Pets on Quilts Show

I’m also still collecting photos to create a “Pets on Quilts” calendar to use as a fundraiser for local shelters.  An early version will be printed and three winners will receive this version of a 2012 Pets on Quilts Calendar as a prize.   If you have any photos that you’d be willing to provide me, for consideration of this calendar, I’d love you to email me copies ASAP.  September lst will be the last date where I’ll accept photos for the 2012 calendar.

Time to Get Ready for the Pets on Quilts Show

This is definitely a time where those that want to enter the 2011 Pets on Quilts Show should work on getting their pet theme quilts ready, photos of their cute cute pets on their beautiful quilts, and/or pet theme designs in EQ6/EQ7.
The 2011 Pets on Quilts Show will be held August 15th-19th.  This show is not a competitive show, but a time for friends to get together to share with each other how much they love their furry or feathered children, as well as their love of quilting.  And, I hope all the participants have fun at the show and good luck winning  prizes too!

While rules will be announced at the start of the show, you have a variety of options for your entry.  Actually, the rules are pretty flexible.  It is more of a matter that your entry take on a theme of pets and quilting.

Your entry could be a pet theme quilt (even an art quilt with a pet theme)

Pets Pictures, Images and Photos

Your entry could be a picture of your pet(s) on your quilt:

You could even enter that quilted snake you’ve surely made:

Or a cute little rabbit on your quilt:

And, as I anticipate someone will ask…your entry can actually include more than one photo in your blog post, but only one entry per blogger/person. So, start taking a lot of photos now and you can decide how many you want to share in August!

I’m also going to try to learn how group photos work in such tools as Flickr, to allow non-bloggers to also participate (vs me writing a post for each non-blogger that enters).  In the past, when I’ve done  something using such a tool, I had problems with some participants that had photos that were not viewable by everyone.  If anyone has expertise in this area and wants to advise and/or help setup, let me know.  Otherwise, I’ll try to figure this out on my own before the show starts.

If you come across old pictures, or take new photos that you want to give to me for potential use in a Pets on Quilts 2012 Calendar, please email me them to me.  I would like to create some calendars for a fundraiser for a Humane Society in So. Cal., but haven’t yet received enough photos to print this calendar.

Prior to the official announcement of this show on August 15th, you can get a summary update of the plans on my page labeled “Pets on Quilts Show“.  If you check now, you’ll see insights on some of the sponsors that have signed on early.  I’ll be updating this page to show sponsors as they come on board, as well as recognizing all sponsors in a special post prior to this event.

As we are on a pet theme, I wanted to share with you  insight on a giveaway that pet lovers may be interested in:   Just Contest Stuff has a giveaway that could be purrfect for your furry children.  Deadline:  May 28th

Pets on Quilts Show 2010 – Winners

I certainly had fun at the Pets on Quilts Show.  And I appreciated hearing from so many of you, about how you also enjoyed this show.  Thank you to everyone that made it such a special time.

I also want to take a moment to remind us all, that every day there are pets that are living in shelters, and some end up being put down due to lack of space.  While many of you have adopted pets from shelters, I hope we can all continue to be an advocate for our local shelters and encourage others to adopt, and looks for ways we can help our furry friends that live in these shelters.    I’m also hoping, that,  when possible, we can all donate a pet bed or quilt, to our local shelters so that these furry kids can also have a comfy nights sleep.  I know I’ll be blogging more about this in the near future, but I do so hope you’ll also help spread the word that animal shelters can certainly benefit from the help of quilters too!

Ok.  This is what you’ve been waiting for.  I’ve created a spreadsheet that contains a reference for every possible entry that one could win a prize in this show (e.g. PR, share a Pet on Quilt, View, View All, Vote, etc.).  With the exception of the winners of the Viewer’s Choice Awards, I used a random number generator to select winners in each category.

Also, I do hope everyone can reach out the the Sponsors of this show to say thank you, especially those of you that won a prize.  I know I appreciate all the Sponsors donating prizes for this show and I’m confident they’d love to hear from you too!  After all, they were very generous!

Pets on Quilts Show – Its not over till its’ over

In some respects the Pets of Quilt Show 2010 is now officially over.  But, as the benefit of virtual quilt shows you can continue to view the quilts, as come back as often as you like (24/7).  I am going thru all the comments to update my spreadsheet, to reflect entries for the various ways one can win a prize.  Once I get this completed I will be using a random number generator to pick names for each prize.  With luck, I hope to have this completed and be able to announce the winners tomorrow.  In the meantime, I wanted to share these silly riddles with you, as I heard them from someone visiting the show.  My apologies that I can not remember who shared this, and I hope you’ll forgive me, but while I’ve had fun the past two weeks it has been a bit hectic.  I did think these riddles were cute, and thought you may know a small child that you want to share this with:

“What did the dog say when it sat on the sandpaper?”

“Rough, rough.”

“What did the cat say when it sat on the sandpaper?”

“Meow.”

I’ve had some good constructive feedback on better ways to have structured this quilt show, and I appreciate this feedback.  It will definitely help should it be held again in the future, as well as help me for related shows.  If you do have any recommendations you have not yet shared, feel free to leave a comment and/or email me.  I’d love to hear your recommendations.   As I host the Christmas Quilt Show, late fall/early winter, and the Golden Quilter Awards in the spring, I wanted to hold a show in the summer and certainly have enjoyed the Pets on Quilts Show.  But I’d also be interested in hearing feedback to determine if you’d like to see the “Pets on Quilts Show” being held in 2011, or have a recommendation for a different theme.  Lastly, I’m looking for ways to get more EQ6/EQ7 and fibre-arts quilters participating in these shows.  Again, if you have any recommendations or feedback please feel free to leave a comment or email me.

I also want to thank the sponsors for this show for their generosity, those that submitted their pets on quilts to share with all of us, those that helped with PR, and those that took time to view the entries and leave comments to those that shared.   Quilt shows wouldn’t be fun without the quilts to see, and I do realize it takes time to enter any show, thus I am appreciative and want to encourage every quilter to enter shows (virtual, local, international).  This is the a great way for quilters to share, to learn, to support, to inspire, to have fun, and much, much more.
