Rainbow Fabrics

I love beautiful hand dyed fabrics and I’ve been very happy with the fabrics from Rainbow Fabrics. In addition to offering a large selection of hand dyed fabrics, they also offer books, patterns and discount quilting fabrics.

Their confetti quilt pattern, designed by Diana Lacy, owner of Rainbow Fabrics. While it was designed to show of hand dyed fabrics, I also love this pattern with all types of fabrics. This design is one of my favorite quilt designs.

Photos shown here are of the Confetti quilt pattern, using scraps of cheerful fabrics. These quilts were made by Patti Brown, Jeanne Smerdon and Ann Conn to help raise money for Susan G. Komen For The Cure.

Row Quilt Run

Mark your calendars, contact your quilting friends. There is a new quilt run coming to Southern California that you won’t want to miss! The “Row Quilt Run” in San Diego County is scheduled from Saturday, May 2nd thru Sat., May 9th.

Are you wondering what a “Row Quilt Run” is? No, it isn’t a quilt run where you have to row to the quilt shops. It is a quilt run where each quilt shop you visit will give you a free pattern for a quilt row. You can put all the rows together and make a terrific quilt measuring 60″ x 70″.

There are 8 wonderful quilt shops participating in this quilt run and each will be giving away a free pattern. You simply need to visit these stores between Sat., May 2nd – and Sat., May 9th. Some shops will be closed on Sundays, so check each store for hours.

Enjoy getting a carload of friends together, or take time for yourself. You’ll get some great free patterns, see some beautiful quilts on display, and have a great time visiting 8 delightful quiltshops. And, if you don’t live in San Diego County, May is a great time to visit, so come have some fun on this “Row Quilt Run”.

Quilter’s Paradise

In the North County area of San Diego County you can visit Quilter’s Paradise.

Some view they have found Quilter’s Paradise when they visit a major quilt show, attend a great quilt class, or find a great store full of wonderful items that you can’t live without. But for me, Quilter’s Paradise is in Escondido, California. It is a wonderful shop that offers it all and stimulates the senses.

They have a very large selection of beautiful quilts on display, which frequently change, so I always feel like I’m visiting a new quilt show! They always have a great selection of classes, for beginners to advanced quilters, as well as classes that would interest non-quilters (e.g. smocking, purse making, jacket making, etc.). They have a large selection of fabrics, one of the best in Southern California, if not the best. Their selection of fabrics also includes the largest collection of batiks I’ve ever seen in one place. This combined with a great selection of books, magazines, patterns, fat quarters, and various supplies all get me very excited.

I must confess that every new gadget I’ve purchased, in the last few years, I was introduced to those items at this store (before I saw them at any quilt show).

Can it get any better? Well, another great point about Quilter’s Paradise is that they also teach long arm quilting and you can rent use of their long arm machine! And they have two of the nicest classrooms I’ve ever taken a quilting class in.

Are you wondering how they can do all of this in one store? Well, Quilter’s Paradise has 9,000+ square feet. And the owners of Quilter’s Paradise, Sue Mezera and Mark Tiedeman have a great vision that made Quilter’s Paradise what it is today. The two are a great team and compliment each other’s talents and business skills. In addition, they have a wonderful staff that is all very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly! After all, they enjoy working in Quilter’s Paradise as much as quilter’s enjoy visiting Quilter’s Paradise.

Stash Control

Once again, my fabric stash has grown out of control like weeds in an unkept garden! How could this happen? I love gardening and I love my fabric collection, just like I love quilting, embroidery and sewing. I know I have too many projects going on, have been having fun at sew-cials with friends, attending workshops, etc..
Was it the recent week long shopping experience with friends, during the San Diego Quilt Run, that did me in?

Hymm.

I’m going to try a new theory, that I’m going to call the “Fabric Diet”. Like counting calories, I’m going to count my yards of fabric. Well, count the yards of fabric going in vs out of my sewing room. For each completed project I know my stash gets reduced, so I simply need to monitor my fabric and focus on more yards going out than in. Sounds like a good diet to me. But can I stick to it?

This week I only need to buy 1 yard of fabric, to finish my Bella Bella Quilt. And I haven’t been able to finish any project this week. So I must confess my stash will grow by one yard of fabric!

Starting stash = {nightmare on Fabric Street that needs to be measured as a starting point}

Fabric in = 1 yard

Fabric out = in my dreams

Ending stash = Nightmare + 1 yard

Oh my. I really need to work on my Fabric Diet this next week! Wish me luck. I’ll report back soon on how my new diet works out! I’m just not sure I’m up to confessing my starting point (I hate to admit how much I weigh, as well as how much fabric I have in my stash).

Great Gadgets: Bendable Light

I love great gadgets for sewing and machine embroidery. One of my favorites is the bendable LED light. While I have great home lighting and built in lights on all my sewing and embroidery machines, I really find that this bendable light really makes a big difference. I can easily angle it, helping me see more details & texture, as well as fine stitching. I find my eyes do not get tired as easily, when I use this light source. And I find I simply enjoy quilting in the dark evening hours more!

I also bought the additional mounting kit, for all my machines. This way, I can easily use my bendable LED light on any of my machines! If you don’t yet have your own bendable light, trust me….this is a gadget that is well worth the money and you’ll be happy you bought it!

I’ve also heard great feedback from customers who have been very happy with the manufacturer’s (Dream World) warranty!

These bendable lights also make great gifts and not just for quilters, embroiderers or sewers. But guys working with power tools also love them! Perfect gifts for birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas, or any day!

Creative Kindness: Rosie’s Calico Cupboard Quilt Shop – Camp Reach For The Sky

Each year the San Diego-area American Cancer Society hosts camps for kids battling cancer. Rosie Gonzalez organizes school kids, quilt groups, guilds, and individuals to make twin-size quilts that are donated to the campers. As they go through treatment, these special kids can hang onto their quilts as a reminder of their happy camping days.

How you can help: The group gladly accepts quilt blocks, twin or larger quilt tops, and completed new quilts. Or donate quilt fabric and/or batting. Finished quilts must be twin or larger, machine quilted, and bound for stability.

Rosie also needs “long arm quilters” who can help with machine quilting (and shipping costs can be provided, if necessary). Anyone in the San Diego area is invited to join the group’s sew-a-thon, where there are jobs for non-sewers, too.

SewCalGal will also be recognizing long arm quilters that donate time to help with the Camp Reach For The Sky program. Once a month, I’ll recognize a long arm quilter that volunteers for this program.

Inspirations Quilt Shop

Want an inspiration? Visit Inspirations Quilt Shop! This is a delightful store, with a very friendly and helpful staff. Actually, it is one of the friendliest quilting shops I have ever visited!

The Inspirations Quilt Shop opened for business in November 2007, in Valley Center, CA. This lovely little shop is located at: 27350 Valley Center Rd., Valley Center, CA 92082. Their hours are 9am to 6pm Monday thru Saturday. You can contact them at (760)751-9400 or inspirations@vcweb.org for class schedules and product updates.

Their motto is “A place to Inspire and Be Inspired” and I definitely get inspired every time I visit this store. They offer a wide range of floral, children’s and novelty prints from Avyln, Blank Quilting, Kings Road, Northcott, Troy Riverwood, In The Beginning and more.

They also offer long arm services, where they will do your quilting, or you can take a private class to learn to use a long arm quilting machine, and later rent their long arm quilting machine. A 3 hour long arm quilting class is $50 and rental of their long arm quilting machine is only $10/hour.
